PUNJAB GOVT TO INCREASE CHALLAN FINE UNDER NEW TRAFFIC RULES IN AUGUST

Preparations have started to implement the new traffic rules in Punjab from August 2022. It has been decided by the traffic police to procure the necessary equipment to crack down on Overspeed and drunken drives, under which 203 alchometers and 350 related kits besides 66 speedo meters will be procured. According to the information received from ADGP Traffic, a team of 81 ASI rank officers is being prepared to put up traffic blockades in 422 police station areas of the state. Apart from this, DSP rank officers are being deputed as nodal officers in all the districts, who will keep records of traffic challans. It is noteworthy that in 2019, the then Transport Minister Razia Sultana had issued a notification regarding traffic rules for Punjab based on the traffic guidelines issued by the Central Government. Now by amending the same notification, the fine amount has been doubled in cases of drink and drive and over speed. The amended notification has been sent by the Punjab Police to the Chief Minister for the approval of the State Government. New traffic rules have been prepared. As soon as the order of the state government comes, they will be implemented, said S Srivastava, ADGP Traffic.

Chandigarh: Exceeding the speed limit or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in Punjab will now attract community service at a hospitalor compulsory blood donation as punishment, in addition to monetary fines and temporary suspension of license, according to new traffic rules issued by the state's police today. Monetary fines increase after the first offence but the community services will remain the same. The first offence of exceeding a speed limit will attract a fine of Rs 1,000 and suspension of the offender's driver's license for three months. For drunk driving, the fine is Rs 5,000 in addition to the license suspension for the same duration. For subsequent offences, overspeeding will attract Rs 2,000, again along with the suspension of license for three months, while drunk driving will attract a Rs 10,000 fine in addition to the suspension. Offenders will also have to undertake a refresher course by the Transport Authority and teach at least 20 students from 9th to 12th classes for at least two hours in a nearby school for every offence. They will then be issued a certificate by a nodal officer which will be verified by authorities at the time of payment of fines. In addition to this, the offenders will have to do community service for at least two hours in a nearby hospital or donate at least one unit of blood at a nearby blood bank. The fine imposed on the traffic rules violation will cost you a hefty sum, as per the latest notification released from the Punjab Government. As per the new rules, the fine imposed over the violation of traffic norms has been increased for two and four-wheelers in the state. The new rules find mention of over speeding, Red Light Jump, using mobile phones while driving, drink, drugs and driving, overloaded vehicles, and more than two passengers on a two-wheeler. It doesn’t end here only in certain cases, the provision of driving license suspension is also included. The new rule further guides that an officer at the rank of ASI, Assistant Superintendent of Police is only authorized to impose the fine on defaulters. The Punjab state transport department, under the newly elected AAP government headed by CM Bhagwant Mann has issued new traffic rules for safe driving. As per the new rules, people caught overspeeding and driving under the influence of alcohol in Punjab will have to deliver a lecture to school students and perform community service at a hospital or donate blood besides paying a fine. "The traffic rules offender will have to undertake a refresher course by the transport authority and thereafter teach at least 20 students of Classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 for at least two hours in a nearby school," said a notification by the department. After delivering the lecture, the offender will be issued a certificate by the nodal officer. The officer concerned at the time of compounding of offence will check the certificate issued to the offender, it said. "The offender will partake community service for at least two hours in a nearby hospital as suggested by the doctor in-charge or donate at least one unit of blood in a nearby blood bank," said the order.
