Pitch Report: Newlands, Cape Town

• • March 21, 2018 Established: 1845 Capacity: 25,000 Head groundsman: Evan Flint Floodlights: Yes Ends: Wynberg End, Kelvin Grove End Home Team: Cape Cobras Test History: 55 Tests; 24 home wins; 20 away wins; 11 draws Overview It could be the location, or perhaps the backdrop of Table Mountain. Maybe it’s the oak trees or the brewery next door, but Newlands has that something special. It might also just be that Cape Town and in particular the New Year’s Test delivers the most reliable and excitable crowds in South Africa. Added to the spectator-friendly environment is the sporting nature of the pitch, which has seen just five drawn Tests in 28 matches since readmission. Newlands has also been something of a fortress for South Africa in that time – the only side to beat them here since 1993 is Australia, although they have done it four times. The ground hosted its first Test match in March 1889, when England defeated South Africa by an innings and 202 runs. References to ‘The New Lands’ date back to early colonial maps in 1656 and 1661, when the Dutch settlement located at today’s Cape Town city centre literally spread out into new lands, where the current suburb of Newlands is located. While redevelopment in the 90s saw stands replace some of the grass embankments as the stadium became a 25,000-seater, fans still pack the grassy eastern side of the ground to enjoy the shade of the oaks and a splendid view of Table Mountain behind the cricket action. Last Time Out The Prot...

Newlands ground guide

Built: 1888 One of the oldest stadiums in South Africa, Newlands in Cape Town is home to 130 years of international cricket history as well as domestic cricket played by Western Province. Regarded as one of the most beautiful grounds worldwide, the Newlands Cricket Ground underwent development in 2019 in a partnership connection with Sanlam. Although simply referred to by its traditional 'Newlands', due to sponsorship since 2020, the ground's official name is 'Six Gun Grill Newlands'. The land on which Newlands was built was initially rented to the Western Province Cricket Club in 1887 on a 25-year lease. The ground was officially opened a year later with a two-day match between Mother Country and Colonial Born, which went on to become a regular fixture. A ground which was still developing, then hosted South Africa's second Test match in March 1889, from which England came out comfortable winners by an innings and 202 runs; the home side bowled out for 47 and 43 in their respective innings. Over the years, Newlands has played host to historic international matches, branching from the 19th century through two world wars, two turns of a century and apartheid. Prior to the Women's T20 World Cup coming to South Africa in 2023, Newlands last hosted a women's international fixture in 2019 where Dane van Niekerk's 71 not out got the hosts to a convincing chase of 94. Address: 146 Campground Road, Newlands, Cape Town, 7780 By car: Parking is available at the stadium on a first com...

The Newlands Cricket Ground was formally established in 1888 and is considered one of the most beautiful cricket venues in the world. The ground, close to Newlands Stadium, is known for being overlooked by the Table Mountain and Devil's Peak, two of the prominent sight-seeing landmarks in Cape Town, South Africa. The first international match played at the Newlands Cricket Ground was the second Test between South Africa and England in 1889. Since then, it has hosted 58 Tests, 43 ODIs and 21 T20Is. The last international match at this venue was the third and final T20I against England in 2020. The next scheduled fixture at the venue - the third ODI - was indefinitely postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The Newlands Cricket Ground is the home of Western Province Cricket and Cape Cobras in domestic cricket. Following a string of renovations, the stadium has increased its seating capacity to 25,000. If anything, the venue is one of the few grounds in South Africa that assists spin bowlers. Interestingly, the Indian cricket team has never won a Test match at the Newlands Cricket Ground, drawing two and losing three in five visits. Newlands Cricket Ground Test records Highest team total – South Africa’s 651 runs against Australia in March 2009 is the highest Test score at the Newlands Cricket Ground. We visited Newlands for an England v South Africa match and had a fantastic afternoon... and the view was just incredible! Watching England at Newlands has been on my 'bucket list' for years so last year, we booked tickets and had a mini break in Claremont (20mins walk from the ground). We decided to upgrade to a shared box and despite the facilities being basic, thought the extra was money well spent for the meal, view and extra protection from the searing heat (it was 33°). We arrived as early as we could and were only the 3rd group in the box which holds around 20, decided where to sit (I seem to recall we could sit anywhere so chose the frow) and went inside to get a drink. All drinks (alcoholic and non) were included as was a 3 course meal of buffet style hams, samosa style snacks (which were amazing), cheese, fruits etc, a choice of 2 or 3 full on hot meals and lovely chocolate cake. Although seating inside the box was limited, there was plenty outside. As mentioned, the facilities are quite basic and the toilets are on alternate levels, so we had to go up a level to use the toilets, but everything was clean (the toilets were cleaned after each use) and tidy and the staff were excellent. The game we watched was very close, and the atmosphere in the ground and amongst our fellow fans - both Brits and South Africans - was superb. It ran over time and watching the sun set over the extraordinarily beautiful view was amazing. Definitely worth a visit, and if you can affor...
