Ballet is a cruel business. After 10-15 years of monastic training, those few who win professional contracts face slim prospects of advancing from the corps de ballet to the rank of soloist.Even discounting the ever-present risk of a career-ending injury, dancers’ tenures tend to be brutally short. No wonder that so few of themfeel they have the bandwidth to branch out into choreography –- at least, not until they have retired from the stage. And even then, companies rarely take a punt on the inexperienced. Yet the ballet world direly needs fresh choreographic voices to boost demand for live performance. “Worldwide, the search for talented choreographers has become an important issue,” saysBolshoi Ballet spokeswoman Katya Novikova, admitting that the lauded Russian dance company has not built up as strong a pipeline of new choreographers as they would like. This week, the industry has itseyes on Wei Wang. Trained at the Beijing Dance Academy and only in his third season at San Francisco Ballet, the 23-year-old corps de ballet member has just won a coveted promotion to soloist. Allu Arjun picks budding choreographer for special song

It's known that Allu Arjun and Samantha are going to shake a leg in 'Pushpa'. The special song, to be mounted on a rich scale, will be shot in the third week of November. Devi Sri Prasad is said to have composed a peppy, foot-tapping number so that the song becomes memorable for the fans of Bunny. The news is that the Icon Star has roped in a budding choreographer to compose the dance moves for the much-hyped song. He is Yash, the master who has shot to fame with the dance-based TV reality show Dhee. In the past, Yash has done small movies and Sukumar-directed 'Pushpa' is his first tryst with a superstar vehicle. Yash choreographed a song for Samantha in the mystery thriller 'U-Turn' a couple of years ago. 'O Bava' from 'Prati Roju Pandage', 'Glass Mates' from 'Chitralahari', 'No Pelli' from 'Solo Brathuke So Better' are among his previous outings. With 'Pushpa', Yash is seeking to get into the big league. 'Pushpa', which has Rashmika Mandanna as the female lead, will hit the screens on December 17.

Makayla Gordon

Makayla is a professional dancer and budding choreographer based in Los Angeles, California. At only 21 years old, Makayla holds an impressive resume with almost two decades of experience, with her most recent years being trained and mentored under some of the industry’s most prestigious and famed choreographers such as Marty Kudelka, Nika Kljun, Diana Matos, Lindsay Ducos, Natalie Gilmore, Misha Gabriel, and Kenny Wormald. Makayla began her career in dance at the ripe age of three, taking classes in technical skills in dance such as tap, ballet, and jazz at the Pacific Coast Academy of Dance. Makayla continued developing her skills in dance for the next thirteen years while actively competing in dance competitions through both the Pacific Coast Academy of Dance and West Coast School of the Arts before she graduated from Orange County School of Arts. This highly selective institution holds an acceptance rate of only 11%. Where did the idea for your career come from? I’ve been dancing since I was three, but it wasn’t until I was performing on stage that I knew I wanted to pursue a career in dance. This developed further when I joined choreographer Marty Kudelka’s School and mentorship program in 2017. His program blew my mind and inspired me to realize I wanted to tour with artists for a living. What does your typical day look like and how do you make it productive? Each day looks different. I’ll typically spend the entire day rehearsing if I’m on a project, but most days b...

Miami City Ballet to dance new work by budding choreographer Justin Peck

It’s a good thing Justin Peck is young and resilient, as well as talented. Peck, 26, juggles a budding career as a choreographer favorably noticed by critics with his responsibilities as a soloist with the New York City Ballet. Mid-December found him in Miami Beach, rehearsing his pas de deux Chutes and Ladders with Miami City Ballet for the program the company will perform Friday through Sunday at the Kravis Center. The night before his arrival, he’d been on stage with New York City Ballet. Directly after his return to New York, he met with composer Sufjan Stevens to discuss a work Peck is creatingfor New York City Ballet that will premiere in May. As if that weren’t enough, the male dancer scheduled to perform Chutes and Ladders sprained his ankle during a Nutcracker rehearsal. No wonder dark circles pooled under Peck’s eyes. But he was taking it all in stride. His manner during rehearsal, with dancers being considered as replacements, was considerate and calm. That is about what you’d expect from a choreographer who says, “There is a great chemistry that occurs between what I envision and how the dancers respond. The product of those two coming together is, if I’m lucky, something I didn’t imagine in the first place and that extends beyond my imagination.” The history of Chutes and Ladders confirms Peck’s adaptability. The New World Symphony in Miami Beach commissioned the work in a collaboration with Miami City Ballet for an April 2013 showcase of new music, video and ...
