Venkatesh Iyer backs Nitish Rana first over bowling vs Rajasthan Royals

KKR vs RR, IPL 2023: Yashasvi Jaiswal’s sizzling 98* helps Rajasthan Royals swamp Kolkata Knight Riders after Yuzvendra Chahal’s history-making effort Rajasthan Royals toyed with Kolkata Knight Riders to record a commanding nine-wicket victory and jump to third spot (12 points) on the points table in the IPL while almost shutting the playoff doors on their rivals (10 points) here on Thursday. Yashasvi Jaiswal: 'Routine and process' is the 'thumb rule' for next big thing in Indian cricket Yashasvi Jaiswal's journey can be an inspiration for any young cricketer around the world looking to make it big, and on Thursday, by adding the fastest IPL half-century to his resume, the 21-year-old Rajasthan Royals batter further substantiated that. "With a lefthander (Jaiswal) at the crease and him being an offispinner I don't think it was a wrong option," Venkatesh pointed out at the post-match media interaction. The decision seemed baffling as KKR had in-form spinner in Varun Chakravarthy (17 wickets) but Venkatesh said it was more to do with match-ups. "We all know what he's capable with the bowl. He has picked crucial wickets in his career. Unfortunately, it didn't go in our favour, had he picked up the wicket (of Jaiswal), it would have been a captain's masterstroke. These things happen on the field." Terming Rana an "unbelievable bowler", Venkatesh elaborated more on the contentious call. "The wicket was holding a little bit and was on the slower side. We wanted to exploit the sp...

IPL 2023: KKR Captain Nitish Rana Shows Big Heart, Blames Himself And Other Batsmen For Defeat Vs GT

Speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, Rana said: "I think we were 20-25 runs short, up against top teams, we can't be this sloppy with the bat. We didn't get partnerships developing, other than Gurbaz and Russell, no one else, including me, scored. If we got a good partnership in the middle overs, we could have done better. In crucial games and against top oppositions, you need to do all the basics well in all the three departments of the game. The batting was ok today, but we didn't bowl well. Need to do well in the small moments, bowl according to the plan and do the basics well." Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the top-scorer for KKR and smashed 81 off 39 balls. The Afghanistan player had big shoes to fill in the absence of Jason Roy. The right-handed batsman has sort of made sure that he retains his spot for the next game even if Roy is fit. Russell returned to form and scored an unbeaten 34 off 19 balls in the total. KKR did manage to dismiss Wriddhiman Saha for 10 but Shubman Gill kept his team in the game. GT lost the wicket of Hardik Pandya and Gill in successive overs but that didn't prove to be enough. Vijay Shankar scored an unbeaten 51 off 24 while David Miller scored 32* as GT completed the chase to go to the top spot in the points table.

Earlier in the day, multiple reports claimed that KKR were contemplating promoting either Sunil Narine or Shardul Thakur as their captain as a stop-gap arrangement for Iyer. And while these were believed to be true, given the fact that Narine's association with the franchise dates back to over 2012, there were apprehensions around Shardul. It was also stated that KKR will be hosting a grand event to unveil their captain, but as it turns out, neither was true. KKR put out a post on their Twitter handle and a video on Rana to make the an...

IPL 2023: Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh steer KKR home, keep playoff hopes alive

Skipper Nitish Rana (57*) and Rinku Singh (54) struck responsible fifties to guide Kolkata Knight Riders to a six-wicket win against Chennai Super Kings in Chennai on Sunday, keeping alive their chances of making the playoffs in the Indian Premier League. Kolkata Knight Riders batters Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh(PTI) Spinners Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine combined to peg back CSK at regular intervals, preventing them from scoring in the middle overs before Nitish and Rinku stitched a 99-run partnership to set up KKR’s victory. Nitish and Andre Russell knocked off the winning runs with nine balls to spare. KKR didn’t begin the chase very convincingly, their top-order batters finding ways to get out. Rahmanullah Gurbaz chased a wide half volley from Deepak Chahar to find Tushar Deshpande at deep point. Venkatesh Iyer — who had hit Chahar for two boundaries in four balls — was then cramped for a backfoot cut that went straight to Ravindra Jadeja at short third man. That Chahar was bowling to a plan was clear when Jason Roy chased a wide slower ball that he dug out to Matheesha Pathirana at short third man to reduce KKR to 33/3. But Nitish and Rinku got together to calmly knock off the runs by trusting their off-side game. Restricting CSK to their lowest score this IPL on a tacky pitch where the ball didn’t come through easily was job half done though. As long as openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway were batting, CSK were going at almost 10 per over. At his backyard...

rana: KKR Captain Nitish Rana praises Yashasvi Jaiswal after the RR batsman smashed him 26 runs in 1st over

After KKR set a target of 149 runs, Rana took on the responsibility of bowling the first over. However, the move backfired as Jaiswal hit him for two sixes and three fours, providing RR with a flying start. From there, the Royals dominated the match, comfortably achieving the target with nine wickets in hand and 41 balls remaining. In the aftermath of the game, Rana praised Jaiswal for his outstanding innings. He acknowledged that he took a chance by opening the bowling, but this time it did not work in his favor. "Jaiswal's innings was praiseworthy. Today was one of those days in life when everything went in his favor. I thought 180 was a par score. We made a lot of mistakes with the bat, and that's the reason we missed out on two points," Rana commented after the match. Unfazed by the opinions of others, Rana added, "I don't care what the world says about me. I bowled first because I thought I could gamble as a part-timer and get the in-form Jaiswal out, but it was his day." KKR all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer, who scored a half-century in the match, supported his captain's decision. He highlighted that Rana, being an off-spinner, was a suitable option to bowl against the left-handed Jaiswal. He clarified that it was a match-up consideration rather than a wrong choice. Venkatesh acknowledged Rana's bowling abilities and highlighted his past success in picking crucial wickets. Although the decision to have Rana open the bowling seemed puzzling given the presence of in-form spi...
