Hard seltzer continues to take on many different forms. NÜTRL is a vodka seltzer brand that was released regionally in late 2021, and with its success (by what metric, I’m not sure), it has now been rolled out nationally. On paper, NÜTRL is not any different from most seltzers; the drink contains 4.5% alcohol, and 100 calories per can, which is a pretty standard build for most hard seltzers. 4. Watermelon Man, what the hell, why do people bother making “naturally-flavored” watermelon anything? Don’t get me wrong, watermelon is absolutely delicious, but as a fruit, it’s pretty plain, let’s not kid ourselves. It’s mostly very juicy, and sugary if you’re lucky. If you were to flavor a seltzer with plain watermelon juice it’d be boring as shit. I don’t know how, but NÜTRL managed to make this one taste slightly like a watermelon Jolly Rancher. Is that terrible? Not really, but when you compare this flavor next to the more natural-tasting ones, it sticks out like a sore thumb. 3. Mango If you’re going to go for fruit-flavored seltzer, mango is a pretty safe bet, and sometimes it’s even my favorite. It seems like every hard seltzer brand has a mango-flavored version, like it’s some kind of legal obligation. The gluten-free drink, which recently launched in the U.S., boasts a simple and straightforward recipe: real vodka, real juice and real seltzer, nothing else. NÜTRL is available in three flavors — pineapple, raspberry and watermelon — and contains 4.5% alcohol inside a 355mL can, with no added sugar. In total, each can contains only 100 calories and 2.4g of sugar. Anheuser-Busch is one of the largest companies in the beer market. According to Forbes, the brand’s parent company (ABI) accumulated almost $47 billion USD in sales last year. As ready-to-drink beverages have become the fastest-growing alcohol category in the U.S., the company is looking to expand its stake in the alcohol business with its newest addition to the category. In the last year alone, more than 181 seltzers were introduced in the increasingly saturated product category. However, with each new addition to the seltzer market, the category continues to adapt to consumer preferences. According to the IWSR, more than half of US consumers prefer vodka as the base in their ready-to-drink beverages — a driving factor in NÜTRL’s decision to create its recipe with vodka at its core. Nutrl is a new line of ready-to-drink vodka seltzers flavored with real fruit juice, launched by Anheuser-Busch. There’s nothing particularly unique about the product line, but Nutrl is hoping to win over fans by offering these “unpretentious and uncomplicated,” refreshing, sessionable, low-calorie (100 calories per can), low-alcohol drinks, made with just vodka, seltzer, and real fruit juice. Each is 4.5% abv. Nutrl Pineapple Vodka Seltzer– This is a very refreshing drink, dangerously tempting to down after a run or a hike (or Crossfit, per the brand’s own example). It has a light and crisp taste and feel, with that tantalizing tropical accent popping nicely. The pineapple is rather subtle but not wanting, with just the right touch of fruitiness and tartness. The vodka is present, but it is one of the softest expressions of vodka I recall tasting in a ready-to-drink cocktail. The seltzer is probably the least noticeable element here, with the effervescence on the lower scale of other seltzer varieties. A Nutrl Raspberry Vodka Seltzer – The raspberry flavor is a bit more brash on all levels and a bit of a letdown in comparison to the wonderfully balanced Pineapple. The nose and the palate of the raspberry is slightly medicinal, and although it’s not terribly sweet, it starts to wander into the likeness of fruit flavored cough syrup.
