Neerali in Malayalam means Octopus, and the title is an apt one for Superstar Mohanlal's first release of 2018 as the film tells the story of Sunny George (Mohanlal) who hangs on to life like an Octopus. While traveling from Bangalore to Kozhikode along with a coworker/driver Veerappan (Suraj) to be with Sunny's wife who has just gone into labour, the vehicle Sunny is traveling in, goes out of control down a slope to end up hanging on a cliff, balancing on a tree. Neerali is a nonlinear depiction interconnecting Sunny's life and the thrilling moments after the accident. Will Sunny and Veerappan escape from an inevitable death is the question that induces curiosity in the viewer. Malayalam industry has not seen a movie of this genre lately, with the central character trapped at a place. The basic thread has possibilities to include aspects like survival techniques, positive attitude, sensibility, etc, which are qualities one should possess to successfully retrieve oneself from any dreadful situation. There are some scenes in Neerali which are really good and succeed in giving goosebumps to the audience. But the screenplay has many negative points like characters who lack conviction, lag, flatness, a parallel story. In 2016, Vysakh’s Pulimurugan, starring Monster follows the same template as previous Mohanlal films that have turned out to be disasters. A larger-than-life hero is presented as irresistible to women, despite his misogynistic double entendres, bombastic action sequences and punch dialogues — all of which contain innumerable nods to the actor’s earlier films. These films present a bored Mohanlal going through the motions in an uninspired script. Superstar Mohanlal maintained a close association with actor and filmmaker Pratap Pothen, who passed away on Friday, and his brother producer Hari Pothen. “When I started directing ‘Barroz’, Pratap had promised to associate with the project. He said he would lend voice to a puppet, which was among the characters in the movie. Then the Covid-19 pandemic struck. Afterwards, Pratap became busy with other films,” says Mohanlal. Even then Pratap regularly contacted Mohanlal and enquired about his first directorial venture. “Pratap even came to the sets of ‘Barroz’ during the initial filming and was beside me. He was very curious about the project,” recalls Mohanlal. Moreover, ‘Oru Yathramozhi’, directed by Pratap, was among the most memorable movies for Mohanlal. “It is one of those films which I really enjoyed doing. Scripted by John Paul based on a story by Priyadarshan, I spent several days acting in the movie along with the legendary actor Sivaji Ganesan. We all, in fact, enjoyed every moment together. Among those who shared our joy was Pratap. That is still one of the most beautiful personal experiences in my life,” says Mohanlal.
