Ola S1 electric scooter premiers with high speed, low price and huge tech

Ola Electric Produced locally in Ola’s giant electric scooter megafactory Today the scooters look like leaders in the local market, but tomorrow could see shockwaves reverberate globally. That’s because the two models offer better performance than any other comparably sized electric scooters. An 8.5 kW electric motor mounted within the scooter’s frame provides the S1 with a top speed of 90 km/h (56 mph) and an even faster top speed in the S1 Pro of 115 km/h (71 mph). An innovated banana-shaped battery pack under the rider’s feet offers 3 kWh of capacity and 121 km (75 miles) of range. In the high spec S1 Pro, those figures increase to 4 kWh and 181 km (112 miles) of range. Dual single-supported wheels add to the attractive styling The battery is not removable, but can be quick charged most of the way in around 30 minutes. An 18-minute charge on an Ola quick charger will provide 75 km (46 miles) of range. Most riders will likely charge overnight, though, where home charging with a 750W portable charger will take around 4.5 hours on the S1 and 6.5 hours on the S1 Pro. The under-foot mounting of the battery lowers the scooter’s center of gravity and maximizes the storage space under the seat. Ola claims that riders can fit two helmets into the 36L storage compartment. Most scooters require bolting on a large rear trunk to get anywhere near that kind of storage space. • • • • • The high performance of the scooters might not even be their biggest selling points. Instead, the te...

Ola S1 Pro review: True range verified

While we did get a brief first taste of the Ola S1 Pro a few months ago, it was a rather short ride held in the confines of a gated community, giving us a limited understanding of India's most talked about e-scooter. Now, we've managed to ride one in the real world – subjecting it to traffic, heat, the mess that is the Mumbai road network and even a full range test! Here's what we found. Ola S1 Pro: city slicker The S1 Pro is among the most powerful electric two-wheelers on sale today, courtesy of an 8.5kW permanent magnet motor. So while many other EVs can feel a bit inadequate in the real world, the Ola has absolutely no problem keeping up with (and passing) traffic in the city, and can even hold its own on wider, more faster-flowing stretches of road. But it doesn't feel quite as effortless as it perhaps could have, and that's because all three of the S1 Pro's riding modes feel significantly dulled down compared to when we first rode the scooter, and this is most evident when setting off from a standstill. Up to about 30kph, responses are quite lethargic and the scooter lumbers forward – our VBox confirms this, because mode for mode, the Ola is actually slightly slower from 0 to 40kph than the less powerful Ather 450X. Post 40kph, though, the Ola enters its element and accelerates reasonably swiftly, and we saw Ola's claimed top speed of 115kph on our dashboard. However, the VBox told us that, in truth, the scooter was only travelling at 99.8kph at this point. Neverthel...
