OLTAS Payments OLTAS was introduced for collection, reporting and accounting of all kinds of direct taxes. We will discuss below procedure for direct tax payments under OLTAS. You may do it online or offline by visiting any of the OLTAS authorised bank branches. Payments online • Visit • Choose the relevant challan for the payment: • For ease of explanation, we are using screenshots of Challan No./ITNS 280. Procedure is similar for all types of challan • Select applicable major head code i.e., corporate tax or non corporate tax under taxes applicable: • Enter PAN and Assessment year for which tax is being paid. No need to enter the name of taxpayer. Data with respect to name will be automatically taken from PAN records and displayed in the next screen. • Enter contact details such as address, email id and contact number • Select applicable minor head code • Select mode of payment whether netbanking or by using debit card and choose the bank name from the drop down. As of now debit card payment is enabled only for four banks namely HDFC, ICIC, Indian Bank, Punjab National and State Bank of India. Netbanking payment is available for 25 banks. Also enter captcha image and click on ‘proceed’ • Once you submit the data, a confirmation screen will be displayed along with that taxpayer’s details as per PAN. • Post verification, click on ‘submit to the bank. Online Tax Accounting System (OLTAS) Tax deducted at Source (TDS) Challan Status enquiry In brief OLTAS is for collection, accounting and reporting of the receipts and payments of Direct Taxes from all kinds of taxpayers, online, through a network of bank branches. To understand what is OLTAS, its features and benefits, you can click here - Any category of direct tax such as income tax, corporate tax, tax deducted at source (TDS), tax collected at source (TCS) etc can be paid using a single copy challan either online or by visiting bank branches authorised for OLTAS. Once taxes are paid by taxpayers, the collecting bank will capture the entire data of the challan and transmit it electronically to the Income-tax Department. Banks also reconcile daily tax collection with the information and data received by Tax Information Network (TIN) from the banks. This enables easy verification/ status checking of all details and information about the tax payments online. Once taxes are paid, tear off portion of counterfoil is given to taxpayers post rubber stamping by collecting bank and in case of online payment, challan is generated immediately. Challan/counterfoil contains Challan Identification Number (CIN) a unique serial number containing the following: • 7 digits BSR Code allotted by RBI to the bank branch where tax is deposited • Date of presentation of the challan (DD/MM/YY) • 5 digits serial number of Challan in that bank branch on that day CIN is a proof of tax payment by a ...

Protean (formerly NSDL eGov) e-Gov e-TDS/TCS Return Preparation Utility (RPU) TDS/TCS statements are furnished on quarterly basis, Now, quarterly statements pertaining to Financial Year 2007-08 onwards are accepted as per the guidelines of Income Tax Department. ITD has notified revised file formats for preparation of TDS (i.e. Tax Deducted at source) and TCS (i.e. Tax collected at source) statements . Deductors/collectors are required to prepare e-TDS/TCS statements as per these file formats using, Protean (formerly NSDL eGov) e-Gov. Return Preparation Utility or in-house software or any other third party software and submit the same to any of the TIN-FCs established by Protean (formerly NSDL eGov) e-Gov. Protean (formerly NSDL eGov) e-Gov has developed software called e-TDS/TCS Return Preparation Utility (RPU) to facilitate preparation of e-TDS/ TCS returns. This is a freely downloadable VB based utility. Separate utilities are available for preparation of each type of statement.
