Narmada river has come out of sweat of Lord Shiva at Amarakantak which is also a shaiva kshetra but in its course down , river is separated into two branches at Omkareshwr island ,called Narmada and kaveri which meet again in down course. King Mandhatha who was ancestor of Lord Rama by more than 12 generations, was a devotee of Lord Shiva, and did penance for thousands of years, and Lord appeared as Jyothrlinga and blessed him.So ,this island is known as Mandhata puri. Since that time , it is worshipped as one of the 12 jyothirlingas !( satya Yuga, tretha Yuga, dwapara yuga,now in Kali Yuga ! To reach the island, one has to cross Narmada river by boat for a nominal charge but after reaching the other bank one has to climb many steps to reach the temple. Instead ,if we cross by bridge(jhula) ,we can manage with less number of stairs. Temple is on the slope of hill, so it is narrow and cramped ,more than 4 persons at a time ,can not be accommodated , water for abhishakam is also sent through pipes. Idols of different deities are also installed in different tiers. First we see pancha mukha Ganapathi, then at second level, Devi Parvathi along with Omkara Linga( different shape) are seen along with standing Nandi vigraha.
