No quick fix: How OpenAI's DALL·E 2 illustrated the challenges of bias in AI

An artificial intelligence program that has impressed the internet with its ability to generate original images from user prompts has also sparked concerns and criticism for what is now a familiar issue with AI: racial and gender bias. And while OpenAI, the company behind the program, called DALL·E 2, has sought to address the issues, the efforts have also come under scrutiny for what some technologists have claimed is a superficial way to fix systemic underlying problems with AI systems. “This is not just a technical problem. This is a problem that involves the social sciences,” said Kai-Wei Chang, an associate professor at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering who studies artificial intelligence. There will be a future in which systems better guard against certain biased notions, but as long as society has biases, AI will reflect that, Chang said. OpenAI released the second version of As with many AI programs, it did not take long for DALL·E 2 draws on another piece of AI technology created by OpenAI called Other Twitter users who tested DALL·E 2 replied to Woolf’s thread sharing the same issue — specifically regarding race and gender biases. They suspected OpenAI’s diversity solution was as simple as the AI’s appending gender- or race-identifying words to the user-written prompts without their knowledge to inorganically produce diverse sets of images. “The way this rumored implementation works is it adds either male or female or Black, Asian or Caucasian to the prompt ...

DALL·E 2

We’ve limited the ability for DALL·E 2 to generate violent, hate, or adult images. By removing the most explicit content from the training data, we minimized DALL·E 2’s exposure to these concepts. We also used advanced techniques to prevent photorealistic generations of real individuals’ faces, including those of public figures. Our content policy does not allow users to generate violent, adult, or political content, among other categories. We won’t generate images if our filters identify text prompts and image uploads that may violate our policies. We also have automated and human monitoring systems to guard against misuse. Learning from real-world use is an important part of developing and deploying AI responsibly. We began by previewing DALL·E 2 to a limited number of trusted users. As we learned more about the technology’s capabilities and limitations, and gained confidence in our safety systems, we slowly added more users and made DALL·E available in beta in July 2022. Stable Diffusion vs. DALL·E 2: Which is better? [2023]

Stable Diffusion and DALL·E 2 are two of the best AI image generation models available right now—and they work in much the same way. Both models were trained on millions or billions of text-image pairs. This allows them to comprehend concepts like dogs, deerstalker hats, and dark moody lighting, and it's how they can understand what a prompt like "an impressionist oil painting of a Canadian man riding a moose through a forest of maple trees" is actually asking them. Learn how In addition to being AI models, Stable Diffusion and DALL·E 2 both have apps that are capable of taking a text prompt and generating a series of matching images. So which of these apps should you use? Let's dive in. How do Stable Diffusion and DALL·E 2 work? For image generation, Stable Diffusion and DALL·E 2 both rely on a process called diffusion. The image generator starts with a random field of noise, and then edits it in a series of steps to match its interpretation of the prompt. By starting with a different set of random noise each time, they can create different results from the same prompt. It's kind of like looking up at a cloudy sky, finding a cloud that looks kind of like a dog, and then being able to snap your fingers to keep making it more and more dog-like. A dog-shaped cloud floating in a clear blue sky—from top-left, going clockwise, at 10 steps, 20 steps, 40 steps, and 120 steps. Even though both models have similar technical underpinnings, there are plenty of differences between the...
