Secondary Education in Orissa

ADVERTISEMENTS: The foundations of the modern educational system were laid by the Christian missionaries. The growth of secondary education in Orissa prior to independence progressed with long strides and was not at all satisfactory. The number of schools was very few and far between. After Lord Macaulay’s minute and owing to the policy of government, English dominated the educational field. After Lord Auckland’s minutes of 1845-46, Zilla Schools were established in almost all district headquarters. In South Orissa there was only one High School at Chhatrapur in 1855. By 1860, the Zilla School was functioning at Berhampur.
