Hamza Shehbaz elected Punjab CM after garnering 197 votes in session marred by melees, chaos

PML-N's Hamza Shehbaz has been elected the new chief minister of Punjab following a chaotic session at the provincial assembly that saw Deputy Speaker Sardar Dost Muhammad Mazari attacked and PML-Q leader Chaudhry Parvez Elahi get injured. Hamza garnered 197 votes to beat Elahi — his rival, whose party PML-Q and ally PTI boycotted the election that began after more than five hours of delay following a number of altercations and melees on the floor of the House throughout the day. Announcing the results of the election, the deputy speaker said the day represented a "success of democracy" and lauded the "positive role" of the MPAs who took part in the voting despite today's events. In his maiden speech as the chief minister of the province, Hamza said his victory belonged to every lawmaker still seated in the assembly and thanked his allies for their support. He said he would not "pursue revenge" and would instead work to serve the people and benefit them — terming it as the "best [form of] revenge". The newly elected chief minister said he would make price committees functional and that dialysis machines lying useless in hospitals would be repaired. He said a modern local government system would also be introduced in Punjab. PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz congratulated her cousin on winning the election. "Brothers and sisters of Punjab, the mandate that was stolen from you during the 2018 election has been returned to you once more," she declared, adding that the people ...

After dramatic day, PML

Parliamentarians congratulate Hamza Shahbaz after he retains his chief minister Punjab position. — Geo News Screengrab • 10 votes of PML-Q members rejected by deputy speaker under Article 63(A). • Hamza Shahbaz gains a 3-vote victory over Pervez Elahi. • PTI to approach country's top court to challenge the decision. After a dramatic day, PML-N's candidate Hamza Shahbaz Friday retained the post of the Punjab chief minister against Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervez Elahi through a three-vote victory. Following the counting of votes, Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost Mazari, citing the Supreme Court's opinion in Article 63A case, rejected 10 votes cast by PML-Q members. As a result, Hamza received 179 votes, while Elahi, who was backed by the PTI, managed to bag 176 votes. As Mazari announced the result, PTI leader Raja Basharat had an argument with the deputy speaker and said that since Chaudhry Sajid was the parliamentary leader of PML-Q, Article 63(A) did not apply to Elahi's case. "As per Sajid's instruction, all PML-Q members were to vote for Elahi," he said, adding that Shujaat's letter held "no value". "You are depriving the candidate of his right," Basharat accused the speaker. As the argument between the two kept escalating, with PTI members refusing to accept the decision, Mazari adjourned the assembly's session, telling PTI and PML-Q members to "approach the court" regarding their grievances. SC order on Article 63(A): Who can give directions to MPs? The Su...

Elahi suffers shock defeat as Hamza retains Punjab CM position after deputy speaker's contentious ruling

In a shock result, PML-Q's PTI-backed candidate Parvez Elahi lost the Punjab chief minister's election to PML-N's Hamza Shehbaz on Friday, after Punjab Assembly Deputy Speaker Dost Mohammad Mazari ruled that PML-Q members' votes were not counted in light of party head Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain's letter. According to Mazari, Hamza received 179 votes whereas Elahi garnered 176 votes, but only after 10 votes of Elahi's own party were not counted, which turned the tables in Hamza's favour. Soon after the contentious ruling was announced, PTI leader Asad Umar tweeted that the party would approach the Supreme Court tonight. Mazari excludes PML-Q votes citing Hussain's letter While announcing the result, Mazari read Hussain's letter out loud. "As party head of Pakistan Muslim League, I have issued directions to all my provincial members to cast their votes in favour of Muhammad Hamza Shehbaz Sharif," Mazari quoted Hussain as saying. "As per this letter, according to the ruling of the Supreme Court, all the 10 votes cast by PML-Q leaders have been rejected," Mazari ruled. Hafiz Ammar Yasir, Shuja Nawaz, Muhammad Abdullah Warraich, Parvez Elahi, Muhammad Rizwan, Sajjad Sajid Ahmed Khan, Ehsanullah Chaudhry, Muhammad Afzal, Bismah Chaudhry, and Khadija Umar were the 10 members whose votes were not counted. Pakistan: Sindh CM visits badly hot Karachi areas to ensure swift resumption of vehicular traffic

Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah twice visited some badly affected areas in Karachi to ensure the law and order situation is under control and thoroughfares are cleared of debris so that vehicular traffic, especially new air-conditioned intra-city bus service becomes operational in the shortest possible time. At least four buses of the newly launched Sindh People’s Bus Service were badly damaged in Karachi during the violent protests that started soon after the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan. One of these buses was torched by the rioters. None of the passengers were hurt in the violent incidents as they left the bus before vandalism started. An official statement issued by the People’s Bus Service, however, said that staff of the buses had to face the violent situation. The next morning the CM again hit the roads of Karachi to ensure that the law and order situation was fully under control for a smooth flow of traffic. He visited a number of areas in the city to oversee the security situation. Due to his efforts, the People’s Bus Service resumed its operation in Karachi within 20 hours after the suspension of the service due to the agitation.
