What is a PALS Certification?

Dec 7, 2017 • 2 min read The acronym PALS stands for Pediatric Advanced Life Support, an instructional course designed and developed primarily to educate health care providers who are responsible for treating or responding to infant or child-related emergencies. A PALS certification course simulates pediatric emergencies to train students and better prepare them for real-life situations. The main difference between the PALS certification and other similar medical certifications is that the coursework pertains to the uniqueness of pediatric emergencies. Here’s a little more information on what PALS certification is and why it matters. What’s included in a PALS course? A PALS certification course includes scenario-based training modules designed to teach participants how to handle a medical emergency for an infant or child. For instance, some of the lessons cover pediatric CPR, management of respiratory emergencies, resuscitation and emergency cardiovascular care and more. Those who successfully complete the coursework and pass the associated exam receive a certification card that is valid for a period of two years. Who needs a PALS certification? Most students who pursue a PALS certification are instructed to do so by their employer, so there is little to no question as to whether it’s required in order to fulfill their job duties. Generally speaking, PALS certification is essential for health care providers who are responsible or may potentially be responsible for respondi...

The Pals Battalions Of The First World War

Pals battalions were a uniquely British phenomenon. Britain was the only major power not to begin the First World War with a mass conscripted army. After the war broke out, it quickly became clear that the small professional British Army was not large enough for a global conflict. In a wave of patriotic fervour, thousands of men volunteered for service in Lord Kitchener's New Armies. As part of this, it was realised that local ties could be harnessed for national gain. Many more men would enlist if they could serve alongside their friends, relatives and workmates. On 21 August 1914, the first Pals battalion began to be raised from the stockbrokers of the City of London. In a matter of days 1,600 men had joined what became the 10th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. Lord Derby first coined the phrase 'battalion of pals' and recruited enough men to form three battalions of the King's (Liverpool) Regiment in only a week. Pals battalions became synonymous with the towns of northern Britain. Men from cities including Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Hull, Glasgow and Edinburgh all enlisted in their thousands in 1914 and 1915. But Pals battalions were also raised from Birmingham to Bristol and from Cambridge to Cardiff. After training, the first Pals battalions began to arrive on the Western Front from mid-1915. However, many of the Pals battalions were not to see their first major action until the first day of the Battle of the Somme on 1 July 1916. Many of these units sustained heavy ca...

What Is PALS Certification

You’ve probably heard of basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) certifications, whether you’re an EMS practitioner, nurse, or physician. These courses teach people how to spot life-threatening emergencies and how to react with chest compressions, breathing, and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). The pediatric advanced life support (PALS) certification is a lesser-known yet vital life-saving credential. Here’s all you need to know about the PALS course and how it may save a child’s life in the event of a cardiopulmonary emergency. What Is PALS Certification , and What Does It Mean? Unlike BLS and ACLS, PALS focuses only on providing life-saving treatment to severely sick or wounded babies and children. PALS certification is a higher level of training than CPR or BLS. “By the conclusion of the training, professionals master PALS treatment algorithms, team dynamics, successful resuscitation, and effective pediatric evaluation,” according to the National CPR Foundation. A PALS online course covers the following topics: Preventing respiratory and cardiac arrest in any young kid requires early identification and management. Initial impressions, primary and secondary evaluations, and diagnostic tests are all used in a systematic approach to pediatric assessment. Priorities and actions for babies and children suffering from respiratory and/or circulatory crises During pediatric resuscitation, efficient communication and team dynamics a...

Partner Institutes – Enhancing Engineering Education

PALS offers a year-long program with various activities for the students, faculty and management of Engineering Institutions. These Engineering institutions who are beneficiaries of PALS initiative are known as Partner Institutes (PI). Currently, PALS has 27 PIs who are being served with the expertise PALS has to its credit aided by the experience of Alumni from various IITs and Industry experts. PALS conducts various interventions like Campus Events, Theory to Practice Lectures (T2P lectures) and many more enabling students, faculty and management of PIs to know what the Industry expects from students and further help them become better engineers. What is PALS?

Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies, or PALS, is a scientifically-based peer-mediated instructional program developed by researchers at Vanderbilt University. PALS research employed multiple studies that incorporated randomized field trials, resulting in the highest standards of research-based evidence. The strategic efficacy of PALS has been studied and evaluated over the past 35 years through close collaboration with hundreds of teachers to ensure that PALS’ methods are feasible and effective in the classroom. With PALS, every student in the class is paired, and each pair consists of one student who is academically stronger than the other. PALS sessions vary from 20 to 45 minutes in duration 2 to 4 times a week. During these sessions, the students in a pair take turns as tutor and tutee while working on structured activities that introduce grade-relevant skills and hones in on the difficulties each pair of students may be experiencing. The pairing creates 10 to 15 instructional experiences in a given classroom. Each PALS manual provides you with all the information you need to implement PALS in your classroom, including teacher-directed scripted lessons and student materials. As a supplement to the core curriculum, PALS fits well with a variety of instructional approaches, and allows teaches to address a broader range of student developmental areas. Begin using PALS by arranging a one day In practice, PALS has proven to be effective in the classroom for many reasons, a few...
