Tamil in a Parallel Universe – Dravidian Linguistics Blog

What inspired me to write this article is the movie ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. The thing that fascinated me in this movie was the appearance of two other Spider-Men from alternate/parallel universes in the Multiverse. It is not that this is the first time I have come across the concept of the Multiverse. It has been put to use in many popular media such as Films, Comic books, TV Series etc. This concept set me thinking – How would a language differ from one universe to another? Would the historical path of a language vary from one universe to another? Would a language, say Tamil, be very different among the universes in the Multiverse? One can infer some guidelines as to how to world-build a language in a Multiverse from watching this movie. The three Spider-Men that we see in the movie are not very different from each other. They all are called Peter Parker. They all wear red and blue super-hero latex suits. So, I modelled ‘Tamil in a Parallel Universe’ after the principles I gleaned from the world-building of this movie. So, Tamil would still be called t̪əmɪɻ/தமிழ் in the Multiverse, just like all Spider-Men are called Peter Parker. There aren’t big differences between the Spider-Men’s lives – they all date a girl named MJ (In one universe, it is Mary Jane and Michelle Jones in another), and they all can shoot webs(only one Spider-Man can do it naturally) etc. The significant differences are the villains they fight against in each universe. Similarly, I wanted this ‘Tami...

Written by S NAGARAJAN Date: 8 February 2017 Time uploaded in London:- 5-53 am Post No.3616 Pictures are taken from different sources; thanks. contact: [email protected] Santhanam Nagarajan It was the American Physicist Hugh Everett III (Birth 11-11-1930 Death: 19-7-1982) who proposed the new path breaking theory of Parallel Universe. He said that the quantum effects cause the universe to constantly split and proposed many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. Including Niels Bohr laughed at the ‘stupid idea’ proposed by him. It was in 1963 that the great scientist J.B.S. Haldane said that “Theories have four stages of acceptance: 1) this is worthless nonsense; 2) this is an interesting, but perverse, point of view 3) this is true, but quite unimportant 4) I always said so.” Arthur Schopenhauer also echoed the same view and said that “All truth passes through three stages: First, it is ridiculed; second, it is violently opposed; and third, it is accepted as self-evident.” The same thing happened to the Parallel Universe theory. It was ridiculed and opposed by one and all then. And accepted now! Everett was dejected and altogether he left the Physics and joined Pentagon and did some worthless job! Later the theory got momentum and scientists like Max Tegmark, Alexander Vilenkin have written their papers in support of Many Worlds Theory. The brilliant physicist Everett’s tapes have been found in the basement of his rock star son’s flat. These were thought lost first a...
