In memoriam: Parkash Singh Badal

Parkash Singh Badal, the former chief minister of Punjab, passed away on April 25, 2023, at the age of 95, leaving behind a legacy that is both admired and criticised. Badal was a titan who dominated Punjab politics for more than half a century, starting his political career as a sarpanch and becoming a five-time CM of the state. Parkash Singh Badal hailed from the semi-feudal, arid south-west Mukatsar belt of Punjab. Son of a wealthy landowner, Badal—a graduate from Lahore—was mentored by his uncle Teja Singh and ushered into politics with the help of close relative Baldev Singh (a former defence minister of India) and Giani Kartar Singh. Making his debut in the Punjab Assembly in 1957, Badal became CM in 1970 for the first time and a union minister in 1977. After a long period of oblivion in the 1980s and early 1990s, he stormed back in the late 90s and enjoyed a further 15 years at the top. Badal slugged, survived, prospered and eventually triumphed in the fierce and competitive world of Sikh and Punjab politics due to his flexible, moderate and pragmatic style of operation. A lifelong member of the Akali Dal, Badal knew how to swim with the tide and times. He began as a loyal 'Panthic' Akali volunteer in the 1950s and '60s, became a crusader for farmers and state rights in the 1970s, a 'Sikh nationalist' in the '80s, a champion of Hindu–Sikh unity in the '90s and a " bijli free, atta dal" (free electricity, flour, legumes) populist in the 21st century. It was this flex...

This was his 14th electoral battle in a long political career that began when he became the sarpanch of Badal village in the Bathinda district. Badal, who became Punjab's chief minister five times and had been part of the movement for a separate Punjabi-speaking state, died at a private hospital in Mohali near Chandigarh on Tuesday, nine days after being admitted there with breathing problems. He was 95. The grand old man of Punjab politics first became chief minister in 1970, heading a coalition government that did not complete its term. He was also the CM in 1977-80, 1997-2002, 2007-12 and 2012-2017. He was MLA 11 times, losing an election for the state assembly only twice. In 1977, he joined Morarji Desai's government briefly as the Agriculture minister at the Centre. In 2008, Badal handed over the reins of the SAD, which he had headed from 1995, to his son Sukhbir Singh Badal, who also became the deputy chief minister under him. Born on December 8, 1927, in Abul Khurana near Malout, Badal graduated from Forman Christian College in Lahore. His first political posts were the sarpanch of Badal village and the chairman of the block samiti. He entered the state assembly from Malout in 1957 as the Congress nominee. In 1969, he won the Gidderbaha assembly seat on the SAD ticket. When Gurnam Singh, the then chief minister, defected to the Congress in 1970, the SAD regrouped and formed the government with the support of Jana Sangh. Badal then became the youngest chief minister ...

• • • • Parkash Singh Badal: When Lahore that lived in his heart, never died Parkash Singh Badal: When Lahore that lived in his heart, never died When riots broke out in 1947, Badal failed to board a train from Lahore to reach his native village in Muktsar. A special military train finally took him back home and he never visited Lahore again. “Like a phoenix, Punjabis on both sides of the border rose again with unmatched courage and became an inspiration in their respective countries,” Like every Punjabi who still lives with that lingering pain of seeing the land of five rivers getting dissected into two parts (one in India and the other in Pakistan), Badal – a graduate from the 159-year-old Forman Christian (FC) College, Lahore – too was no exception, and no wonder that when he got the opportunity to visit Pakistan with then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who took a peace bus to Lahore via Wagah in February 1999, the Akali patriarch was overwhelmed by nostalgia as it was a trip down memory lane for him.
