Forebrain Function & Structure

Benjamin Sheldon Benjamin Sheldon has taught elementary, middle school and high school students in general science, physics, physical science and gifted enrichment for over 16 years. He has a bachelors degree in physics teaching with a minor in mathematics from Brigham Young University and a masters degree in special education with an emphasis in gifted education from The University of Missouri in Columbia. • Instructor The Forebrain The Cortex The most external part of the forebrain, the cortex, is divided into four main lobes. In order to understand the brain a little bit better you should know that each one of these lobes in the forebrain is associated with different functions. Review what are the main functions of each lobe and answer the following questions: • Which lobe will be the most likely damaged if a person has suffered from changes in personality? • Which lobe will be the most likely damaged if a person has trouble seeing? • Which lobe will be the most likely damaged if a person had trouble finding the right words when speaking? • Which lobe will be the most likely damaged if a person has trouble hearing? Answers • The frontal lobe. • The occipital lobe. • The temporal lobe. • The temporal lobe as well. Internal Structures The forebrain is also made up of several internal structures. Each of these parts has very specific roles as well. Try to determine what would happen if any of these areas were compromised by some kind of brain injury. • What would happen to...

What are the functions of the different parts of the brain?

Functions of different brain parts: 1. Forebrain: • The "thinking section" of the brain is what it's called. • The forebrain is in charge of processing sensory information as well as controlling voluntary activities. • The most essential component of the brain is the cerebrum. • It is the most important portion of the brain, and it is linked to thought and action. 2. Mid-Brain: • It serves as a link between the forebrain and the hindbrain, transmitting impulses from the latter to the former. • It also plays a role in vision, hearing, body temperature regulation, and attentiveness. 3. Hind Brain: It is the visceral function control center, which controls the heart's function, heartbeat, breathing rate, blood pressure, sleeping, and other bodily functions. 4. Cerebellum: • The region of the brain is responsible for movement control. • It is involved in maintaining homeostasis, synchronizing body balance, eye movements, body posture, and other subtle changes to motor motions while walking, running, standing, swimming, and other activities.

[Class 10] Human Brain

The brain has three such major regions:- • Fore brain • Mid brain • Hind brain. Forebrain • It is the part associated with thinking . • The various sensory receptors discussed above receive the inputs. • There are various regions in the forebrain that perform the same. • The stimuli sensed and information already available in the brain are put together and interpreted. • Cerebrum • Large outer part of the brain. • Controls reading, speaking, hearing, thinking, vision, learning, emotions, and other senses. Now these stimuli are associated with the sense organs in our body. • But, how do you feel hungry and once you eat enough food, how do you feel full? • This is associated with another center in the forebrain known as Hypothalamus. • The Hypothalamus controls human appetite. • Another important part of the forebrain is the pituitary gland . • It is referred to as the “master gland”. • It monitors and regulates many bodily functions through the hormones that it produces. • Midbrain and Hindbrain • The actions that happen without thinking are called involuntary actions. • Blood pressure, salivation and vomiting are controlled by the medulla in the hind-brain. • The precision of voluntary actions is the responsibility of the cerebellum in the hindbrain. • Cerebellum is also responsible for balance and posture of the body. • The brain continues with the spinal cord by the Brainstem or Medulla Oblongata. • Connects cerebrum with the spinal cord • Includes the midbrain, pons and...

Central Nervous System

Question 1 What are voluntary actions? Question 2 What are involuntary actions? Question 3 What is cranium? What is its function? Question 4 What are meninges. What is their function? Question 5 Name the three regions of brain? Question 6 What are the functions of fore brain? Question 7 What are the functions of mid brain? Question 8 What are the functions of hind brain? Question 9 What are the two parts of central nervous system? Question 10 Explain the function of spinal cord? Brain It is the highest coordinating centre in the body. It is situated in cranial cavity of skull called cranium. It protects the brain from mechanical shock. It is contained in a fluid filled balloon which provides further shock absorption. It consist of 100 billion nerve cell. It is surrounded by 3 membranes called meninges which provide protection to it. Brain has 3 parts : 1) Fore brain 2) Mid brain 3) Hind brain Forebrain It forms the greater part of the brain. It has 3 regions which receive sensory impulses from receptors. There are separate areas which specialised for hearing, smell, sight etc. There are areas of association where this sensory information is interpreted by putting it together with information that is already stored in brain. Based on all these a decision is made how to respond and information is passed on to motor area which control movement of voluntary muscles. Mid Brain (1) It controls reflex movement of head, neck, trunk in response to visual and auditory part. (2) It c...
