PCMC to adjust penalty against property tax

PIMPRI CHINCHWAD: The officials of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC)’s tax department said they would adjust the penalty paid by property holders for illegal constructions against the next financial year’s property tax bills, after the state government’s waiver on fines. In 2022-23, around 6,257 property owners with illegal constructions paid property tax of Rs41 crore and a penalty of Rs113 crore, which would be adjusted in the coming years. PCMC tax department head Nilesh Deshmukh said still there were over 29,000 illegal property owners who are yet to pay their property tax or the penalty on it. Deshmukh said, “With just around two weeks left for the current fiscal to end, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has increased the cash counters across all zones and their timings have also been extended. We are keeping a watch on property holders who are not paying the tax even after the waiver. In such cases, attachment action among other measures will be taken.” PCMC chief Shekhar Singh said strict actions like cutting off water supply, and attachment action are underway, and will be intensified in the coming days. “We have also started auctioning off the attached properties. PUNE: The property tax collection of the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad civic bodies for the 2022-2023 financial year increased by 10% and 35%, respectively, compared to the previous fiscal - a new record for both. Till Friday, the last day of the financial year, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) collected Rs 1,963 crore, while the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) collected Rs 810 crore as property tax. Officials from the PMC's property tax department said that around nine lakh property owners paid their dues in 2022-2023. Around 12 lakh properties are liable to pay tax in PMC limits. PCMC officials said that of 6 lakh registered properties, around 4.3 lakh property owners paid their dues. Online payment was the mode preferred by property owners in both civic limits. "It is the highest ever income for PMC in the history of property tax revenue. It was achieved without any tax amnesty scheme," said Ajit Deshmukh, head of the PMC's property tax department. Around 64,000 new properties were included in the tax ambit in 2022-23. PMC had collected Rs 479.1 crore from property tax defaulters through an amnesty scheme in 2021-22. Owners of 1.5 lakh properties had paid their dues through this initiative after PMC offered an 80% discount.
