The Best Pebble Smartwatches to Buy in 2023

The creator of this post has chosen the Pebble Technology Corporation was the pioneer of smartwatches that has the biggest Kickstarter campaign totaling at over 40 million dollars. Pebble smartwatches dominated the industry for a few years but went from market leaders to selling themselves. They launched their first smartwatch in 2013 and soon afterward that released the Pebble Time which was one of the first smartwatches on the market with serious software upgrades and a very capable operating system. The Pebble Time smartwatch had the biggest Kickstarter campaign in history amercing over 20.3 million dollars. Despite the success of the company, Pebble was going through serious private failures in its management. Pebble failed to sort out their management issues in time and it soon caught up with them. Private Equity Funds and investment groups were no longer willing to invest their money in the company at a time when they were facing serious competition from Apple, one of the biggest tech giants in the industry. When Apple launched its much-awaited watch, Pebble failed to set itself a clear market goal and the Pebble brand ended up becoming a geeky cheaper alternative to the classy Apple Watch. Fast forward, and in 2017, it was the end of the line for the giant. Pebble ended up filing for insolvency with Fitbit acquiring much of its assets especially the software side and the rest of the assets were sold off. A sad ending to a spectacular start, however, Pebble smartwatc...

Pebble Time review: The utility vehicle of smartwatches is back with a few new tricks

The Pebble has been my favorite smartwatch for over a year, despite more advanced contenders. What other smartwatch can last more than a few days on a charge? Can be worn while swimming? Has an always-on screen? The Pebble always had that appeal ; it was more of a regular watch than most smartwatches, and didn't have to be charged every day. The Pebble Time adds a few key improvements and a color screen compared to previous Pebble watches, but owners of previous Pebble watches may not see a need to upgrade yet. I've been wearing Pebble's latest, the Pebble Time, for a week. It lands in a world of Apple Watches and Google watches , and is finally being shipped to those who supported it on Kickstarter. For those who didn't, it'll cost $199 (UK and AU prices not currently available). This isn't the only new Pebble watch, by the way: the all-metal Pebble Time Steel will arrive this summer, with a longer promised battery life, for $100 more. After spending several days wearing Pebble's latest, however, I've come to like it, especially because it's low-key. In the long run, surrounded by fancier watches with higher-profile apps, the appeal of the Pebble Time may wane. (And, if you haven't already pre-ordered via Kickstarter, the aforementioned Time Steel is definitely worth waiting for before committing to this model.) But in the current smartwatch landscape, the Pebble Time's advantages are still unique, making it a worthy alternative to the Apple Watch and Android Wear competi...

10 years since Pebble

It's been 10 years since the Pebble smartwatch landed on our wrists – and a true legend of the wearables space began its life. The e-paper smartwatch debuted in April 2012 as the first true Kickstarter phenomenon – and shipped to backers on 23 January 2013. Pebble watches prefaced the era in which Apple makes the most popular watch on earth, by putting phone notifications at the center of the experience and by ensuring time-telling was just one reason to glance at the wrist. The Pebble smartwatch was incredibly influential; we look back at what it got right...and wrong. Read our 2014 review: Update: We first published this article in 2019 entitled "Remembering the Pebble 1.0: The DNA inside modern smartwatches." The first modern smartwatch Pebble Although Pebble heralded the dawn of the modern smartwatch era, it was far from the first to coin the term. In one form or another, the category Even Allerta, the company behind Pebble, had previously made the inPulse watch for BlackBerry phones, while Sony and Fossil were also dabbling. However, Pebble does get due credit for being the first intelligent timepiece to fully align with the smartphone era; offering full iPhone compatibility and also playing nicely with Android. Indeed, so much of the functionality we come to expect from a 2019 smartwatch can be traced back to this device. The first edition Pebble watch borrowed GPS from the phone for runners and cyclists and leveraged a three-axis accelerometer to make it a viable al...

Pebble Smartwatch Review

Cons • Greater iOS app compatibility than Android. • Some bugs. Editors' Note: Pebble has After a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $10 million, and nearly a year spent working out the kinks of a grass-roots effort to bring a consumer product to market, the Pebble Smartwatch ($150 direct) finally arrived earlier this year. We had some reservations at first, but nearly half a year later, with a number of updates under its belt, we've decided to revisit the Pebble and see how far it's come. The physical design remains identical, while the primary features are largely unchanged. But what's new and most exciting is the burgeoning developer community surrounding the Pebble platform. It's still not the most consumer friendly device out there. But for those who are willing to tinker, the Pebble is now the most well-rounded smartwatch available, and it's good enough to be our first-ever Editors' Choice for this kind of product. loading... Physical Design There's a certain elegance to the Pebble's simple and understated design. I think it's far better looking than, say, the squat and thick The Pebble is available in black, white, red, orange, or gray. On the left side is a single button that brings you to the Menu page, while the right side houses Up, Down, and Select buttons for navigation. Tapping any of the buttons activates the Pebble's backlight, and quick flicks of your wrist also light up the display, which is a nice touch. The watch face is customizabl...

Pebble Steel review: The first great smartwatch is still one of the best

I started with CNET reviewing laptops in 2009. Now I explore wearable tech, VR/AR, tablets, gaming and future/emerging trends in our changing world. Other obsessions include magic, immersive theater, puzzles, board games, cooking, improv and the New York Jets. My background includes an MFA in theater which I apply to thinking about immersive experiences of the future. The competition is advancing fast, but the geeky-cool, functional, and affordable Pebble Steel's conservative approach still works. Released back in January, the stainless steel-clad Pebble Steel is a cosmetic upgrade to the original crowdsourced 2013 smartwatch, the Pebble . Its features are now relatively ancient: it has a non-touch, black and white display. It doesn't track heart rate. It can only store eight apps at a time. And yet, it's my favorite smartwatch. It's waterproof and shower- and swim-friendly. Its display is easily readable, even in bright sunlight. Its battery lasts longer than other smartwatches. It works with both iPhones and Android phones. And, even though it seemed big months ago, it's smaller and more discreet than recent watches like the Samsung Gear S and Moto 360 . Sarah Tew/CNET Recent changes, including a price drop -- it dropped to $199 from its original $249 (£179 in the UK, AU$229) -- and the addition of background pedometer fitness tracking, now make the Pebble Steel a better purchase than before. Let's be honest: The wearable tech landscape is changing rapidly, and many more...
