ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮ ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸಲು ಕಾರಣವಾದ ಘಟನೆ ಇವಿ ರಾಮಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮವನ್ನು ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸಲು, ದೇವರೆಂದರೆ ಉರಿದುಬೀಳಲು ಕಾರಣವಾದ ಘಟನೆಯನ್ನು ಈ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಮರಿಸಬಹುದು. 1904ರಲ್ಲಿ ಪೆರಿಯಾರ್ ಕಾಶಿ ವಿಶ್ವನಾಥನ ದರ್ಶನಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾತ್ರೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆಗ ಅವರಿಗೆ 25 ವರ್ಷ ವಯಸ್ಸಿರಬಹುದು. ಹಿಂದೂಗಳ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಪವಿತ್ರ ಯಾತ್ರಾ ಸ್ಥಳ ಎನಿಸಿದ ಕಾಶಿಯ ವಿಶ್ವನಾಥನ ಸನ್ನಿಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅನ್ಯಾಯ ಇವಿ ರಾಮಸ್ವಾಮಿಯನ್ನು ಬಡಿದೆಬ್ಬಿಸಿತ್ತು. ಕಾಶಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರಿಗೊಂದು ಕ್ರಮ, ಅಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರಿಗೊಂದು ಕ್ರಮ ಇತ್ತು. ಕಾಶಿಯ ಧರ್ಮಛತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಉಚಿತ ಅನ್ನಸೇವೆ ಇತ್ತಾದರೂ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಊಟ ಹಾಕಲಾಗುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಹಸಿವಿನಿಂದ ಕಂಗೆಟ್ಟಿದ್ದ ರಾಮಸ್ವಾಮಿಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಊಟ ಸಿಗದಾಯಿತು. ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣನಂತೆ ಜನಿವಾರ ತೊಟ್ಟು ಹೋದರೂ ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ ಆಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆಗ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರು ಮುಖದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೀಸೆ ಬಿಡುವಂತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ರಾಮಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಮೀಸೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಛತ್ರದ ಭದ್ರತಾ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿ ತಡೆದು ರಸ್ತೆಗೆ ನೂಕಿಬಿಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಣ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಹಸಿವು ತಡೆಯಲು ಆಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಇವಿ ರಾಮಸ್ವಾಮಿ ರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿದ್ದಿದ್ದ ಎಂಜಲೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿದಿದ್ದ ಆಹಾರ ತಿನ್ನುವ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಬಂದಿತು. ರಾಮಸ್ವಾಮಿಗೆ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ನೋವು ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು, ತನಗೆ ಅನ್ನ ನಿರಾಕರಿಸಿದ ಧರ್ಮಛತ್ರವನ್ನು ಅಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರೊಬ್ಬರು ಕಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು ಎಂಬ ವಿಚಾರ ತಿಳಿದಾಗ. ಇವಿ ರಾಮಸ್ವಾಮಿಗೆ ಕಾಶಿ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಆವರೆಗೂ ಇದ್ದ ಭಕ್ತಿಭಾವ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಮರೆಯಾಗಿ ತಿರಸ್ಕಾರ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡಿತು. ಆಸ್ತಿಕರಾಗಿದ್ದ ರಾಮಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅಕ್ಷರಶಃ ನಾಸ್ತಿಕನಾಗಿ ಬದಲಾಗಿಹೋದರು. ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ವಿರೋಧಿಯಾಗಿ ಬದಲಾದರು. ವೈಕೋಮ್ ಸತ್ಯಾಗ್ರಹ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯಪೂರ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾತಿ ಶೋಷಣೆ ವಿಪರೀತ ಇತ್ತು. ಶೂದ್ರರಿಗೆ, ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ದಲಿತರಿಗೆ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದೊಳಗೆ ಪ್ರವೇಶ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದೊಳಗೆ ಇರಲಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಬೀದಿಗೂ ದಲಿತರು ಕಾಲಿಡುವಂತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಆಗ ದಲಿತರಿಗೆ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ ಪ್ರವೇಶ ದೊರಕಿಸಿಕೊಡುವ ಹೋರಾಟ ಶುರುವಾಯಿತು. ಟಿಕೆ ಮಾಧವನ್, ಕೇಲಪ್ಪನ್, ವೇಲಾಯುಧ ಮೆನನ್, ಕರೂರ್ ನೀಲಕಂಠನ್ ನಂಬೂದಿರಿಪಾದ್, ಕೃಷ್ಣಸ್ವಾಮಿ ಅಯ್ಯರ್ ಮೊದಲ...
