Laput providing Magnolia ‘new look’ in road games in PBA

BIG MAN James Laput is providing Magnolia coach Chito Victolero a new look in the ongoing road tour of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). The 6-foot-10 Filipino-Australian has been wreaking havoc to the enemy in Magnolia’s last three games by tallying in a double-double twice to keep the Hotshots unbeaten. “I wasn’t surprised. He is one of the most hardworking guys on the floor during practice,” Victolero said. “He comes in early and works so hard to develop his skills. I know he’ll be a very big asset soon, just give him the proper guidance.” Laput produced 12 points and 12 rebounds plus two blocks last May 28 in Magnolia’s 117-83 win over Blackwater. The eighth-round overall pick in the 2021 rookie draft had eight points and 10 rebounds in a 99-95 victory against Converge last Wednesday, before posting another double-double of 18 points and 13 rebounds against NLEX over the weekend. Victolero said that the PBA road games are a great venue to boost the morale and confidence of his players heading into the regular season that will begin in October after gthe International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup. “The road games are good for our bench players to show what they got,” he said. “We can see in the games what they are capable of prior to the regular season. It also boosts their confidence level and skills.” Despite the new found big man that could join veteran Rafi Reavis and Ian Sangalang in rotation, Victolero said Magnolia’s fast paced game will rema...

PBA players’ pay, team cap on salaries raised

MANILA, Philippines – There are a lot more reasons to play in the Philippine Basketball Association these days. The league’s board of governors approved on Thursday, a 20-percent increase in the individual salary cap for players, putting the ceiling now at P420,000 per month while boosting the team cap to P42 million from P36 million. On top of that, the board also gave ball clubs a free hand in giving out bonuses like multimillion-peso incentives to players during championship playoffs. “We didn’t like it initially,” Mamerto Mondragon, the new league chair representing Rain or Shine, said of the approved increase. “But we realized that we have to strengthen the teams and we have to make some adjustments.” Mondragon, though, admitted that not being able to put a limit in by-phase bonuses would work for “richer” teams, which have been rumored to be very open in promising their players bonuses amounting to the equivalent of up to seven months of their basic pay. “We just have to live with that,” Mondragon said. The new cap applies to every player, even to those who signed fresh pacts like Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine, who inked a two-year extension worth the old ceiling of P350,000 a month. Those players who signed new deals and even those who have existing pacts can renegotiate to get the new maximum with their mother ballclubs. “They can renegotiate,” Mondragon said. “But as far as we [teams] are concerned, they have to perform first.” The decision of the board came in th...
