2020 U.S. Dog Bite Fatality Statistics

DogsBite.org recorded 46 fatal dog attacks in 2020. Pit bulls contributed to 72% (33) of these deaths, over 16 times higher than any other dog breed. During this pandemic year, media reports of fatal dog maulings fell by 45%. In response, our nonprofit sent out 30 FOIAs to various offices and uncovered 6 unreported deaths in 2020. A man in Ohio had his arm severed in a savage attack by two large pit bulls, township officials have said. The dog attack was reported in a 911 call by a woman at a home in the 8700 block of Cincinnati-Dayton Road, West Chester Township, just northeast of Cincinnati, at about 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The dog owner and a woman were taken to a West Chester Hospital West Chester Township spokesperson Barb Wilson told the network the dog owner "sustained severe arm injuries." Captain Rick Bucheit with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and Deputy Dog Warden Abigail Forkner said both dogs were large pit bulls, weighing 93 pounds and 74 pounds. The dog that bit the owner’s arm was named Pitter, and the other dog was named Grayson, according to Bucheit. “Whatever transpired, one of them got angry. The gentleman was bitten pretty severely. It’s a tragic story,” Bucheit said. “No matter what type of breed you own, you have to take caution. It doesn’t matter if you raise it from a pup or mid-life. You have to take caution with them.” Charges are not likely against the dog’s owner, he said. In an effort to stop the dog from attacking its owner, the woman let the other dog out to distract the attacking dog, but the dogs started to fight each other. This is when the woman was able to call 911. Forkner says when she arrived, the dogs were calm and “they both were very bloody from fighting with each other.” Both dogs were sedated and transported to the county’s animal shelter and kennel, where they were euthanized. West Chester dog attack: 2 hospitalized, dog owner’s arm severed

Warning: Video contains graphic image (Dog shown in the video was sedated at the time) WEST CHESTER TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WXIX) - Two people were taken to West Chester Hospital after they were hurt in an attack involving two dogs Wednesday, a township spokeswoman says. One of them had his arm severed in the incident, according to a 911 call placed just before 8:30 a.m. by a woman at a residence in the 8700 block of Cincinnati-Dayton Road. The dog owner “sustained severe arm injuries in the attack,” said a township spokeswoman, Barb Wilson. “Two dogs were involved and two patients were transported to West Chester Hospital. The second patient, a female, sustained less severe injuries.” Captain Rick Bucheit with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and Deputy Dog Warden Abigail Forkner said both dogs were large pit bulls. The county dog warden responded to the home and the dog owner signed the animals over to the county, he said. Both of the animals have been euthanized, Forkner said. Pit Bulls Maul Staff and Students As 21 Injured in Missouri School Attack

A On Tuesday, December 20, staff and students at Willard Intermediate South school were injured when two dogs identified as a pit bull mix breed made their way into the playground. The incident occurred during afternoon recess shortly after 1 p.m. at the intermediate school which teaches students in grades 5 and 6. Getty / VILevi/Google Maps Heather Harman-Michael, director of communications and public relations for Willard School District, told Newsweek: "There was an incident during recess in which neighborhood dogs got onto the playground and injured several students and teachers. Parents of students who were affected were contacted and ambulances were on site to assess and treat any injuries." Of 21 individuals involved, 18 were students and three were teachers. Not all of those injured were hurt by the animals and some suffered injuries after becoming caught up in the mele that followed as people rushed to the school building to shelter from the attacking animals. Three teachers and three students sustained injuries that required medical attention, after suffering bites and scratches. Tennessee mom Kirstie Jane Bennard hospitalized after her 2 kids killed in pit bull attack

• • • • A Tennessee mother-of-two is now in stable condition with “stitches and bite marks over her entire body” after attempting to intervene when her two pit bulls mauled her toddlers to death Wednesday. Kirstie Jane Bennard, 30, was severely injured by the dogs when she tried to pull them off of her 5-month-old boy, Hollace Dean, and 2-year-old girl, Lilly Jane, just outside of their home in Shelby County, Tennessee. Both of the children were pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Bennard’s condition is reportedly stable, but the mother has an “uncountable amount of stitches and bite marks over her entire body, including her face,” Jeff Gibson — the uncle of husband Colby Bennard — wrote on Facebook. While details of how the attack unfolded and why the pets became aggressive remain unclear, the tragic incident reportedly lasted about 10 minutes, according to Gibson. Woman killed by dog in Indianapolis was Marion County Sheriff's deputy

White's 8-year-old son also was bitten and is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries. "She died last night protecting the most important person in her life," Brittany Seligman, White's commander at the Sheriff's Office, said the day after the attack. Dog fatally shot by police Indianapolis police said the attacking dog was fatally shot by a responding officer, who fired when the dog charged at them. White served as a deputy sheriff with the agency since 2007 in the Judicial Enforcement Division, which oversees the transportation of inmates to-and-from courts, collecting delinquent taxes and serving legal process papers. In a statement, Sheriff Kerry Forestal called White a "bright light" to everyone who knew her and said the agency is grateful for her nearly 17 years of service. Dog's owner ID'd A spokesperson with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the attacking dog was not owned by White, and police have identified the owner. They declined to release further information about the dog's owner. In a statement, Indianapolis Animal Care Services said workers impounded the deceased dog, three additional dogs and a cat from the home. The department said they cannot confirm the breeds without a DNA test, but said all the dogs appeared to be a "pitbull-type."
