Pichavaram Mangrove Forest (Chidambaram)

You may not have heard about this place like myself, but its a hidden paradise to say the least. Bring the 2nd largest mangrove forest in the world (after sundarbans), this place gets you closer to nature in the best possible way. The almost empty beach which is reachable via the boat is an added advantage! A must visit if you are near Chidambaram. 15 km from town 10 of which are on a quieter rural road. Arrived at 8am opening time. Not too hot. Took an hour on a row boat for 160rs. That was enough for 'solo' me. With co. may have gone further if deeper meant better/different? Very little English from the rower but a friendly chap, kept hinting for a tip. Official payment made at office on jetty. Camera 25rs. Charged after.(told them to take it from tip). A nice experience worth it for the ride out of manic'ish Town. Enjoy! It is always better to go through official boats. Two categories are available. One is row boat and another is motor boat. Row boat can accommodate up to 4, but suggested only for three. You can engage it for two hours also. Motor boats you can accommodate 13 persons. You have to pay for full boat even if you have less no of persons It will be little hot at that time. 1. It is best to go there at around 8.30 AM 2. The boat charges are about Rs.700 for 2 hrs ride for 5-6 people. Don't go by motor boat or boat with shed. Carry water, and cap for the visit. 3. It usually takes about 3.30 hrs in total. It is about 18 Kms from Chidambaram. You can hire an au...

Forestry :: Mangroves

The word "Mangrove" is considered to be a combination of the Portuguese word "Mangue" and the English word "grove". Mangroves are salt-tolerant plants of tropical and subtropical intertidal regions of the world. The specific regions where these plants occur are termed as 'mangrove ecosystem'. These are highly productive but extremely sensitive and fragile. Besides mangroves, the ecosystem also harbours other plant and animal species. Anthropological pressures and natural calamities are the enemies of the ecosystem. Growing industrial areas along the coastlines and discharge of domestic and industrial sewage are polluting these areas. Many studies have highlighted these problems and the conservation efforts are being considered. Experiences have proved that the presence of mangrove ecosystems on coastline save lives and property during natural hazards such as cyclones, storm surges and erosion. These ecosystems are also well known for their economic importance. They are breeding, feeding and nursery grounds for many estuarine and marine organisms. Hence, these areas are used for captive and culture fisheries. The ecosystem has a very large unexplored potential for natural products useful for medicinal purposes and also for salt production, apiculture, fuel and fodder, etc. The distribution of mangrove ecosystem on Indian coastlines indicates that the Sundarban mangroves occupy very large area followed by Andaman-Nicobar Islands and Gulf of Kachch in Gujarat. Rest of the man...
