Following the publication of May’s finalised services PMI, however, GBP/USD regained upward momentum: the release printed marginally higher than original estimates at 55.2. The exchange rate continued to climb overnight, but fell once more during Tuesday’s European session on weak retail data from the British Retail Consortium (BRC). Falling below estimates of 5.2%, the release showed sales growth of 3.7% in the year to May 2023. Sterling recouped some of its losses in the afternoon, but dipped during Wednesday's Asian session. As markets opened in the UK, GBP/USD climbed steeply – bullish expectations for the Bank of England sustained the uptrend. Nevertheless, strength in the US Dollar (USD) triggered a subsequent downslide.
