What is a pressure cooker bomb?

Explosives typically are placed inside a pressure cooker – a commonplace cooking utensil in many countries – and the device is then detonated using everyday electronic equipment such as digital watches, garage door openers, cellphones or pagers. Pressure builds inside the container and shrapnel is expelled. Al-Qaida affiliates have provided training and manuals on how to build such devices. Homeland Security warned about pressure cooker bombs

U.S. authorities warned as far back as nine years ago that terrorists could use metal pressure cookers to cause deadly carnage. The common kitchen cooking implement - found in countless American homes - has emerged as a key component in the horrific bombings that killed three people and injured more than 170 at the Boston Marathon yesterday. The pressure cooker was then placed in a black nylon bag or backpack. Investigators also found pieces of an electronic circuit board possibly indicating a timer was used in the detonation of the bomb. But authorities have been aware for many years that a common kitchen aid could be modified to exact terror. Two documents - a U.S. Department of Homeland Security memo issued in 2004 and a joint Homeland Security and FBI pamphlet released in 2010 - warned about the dangers of bombs made from pressure cookers. In 2004 a memo titled The memo says the bomb-making technique is commonly taught in Afghan terrorist training camps - and had already led to bombing casualties. • "Typically, these bombs are made by placing TNT or other explosives in a pressure cooker and attaching a blasting cap at the top of the pressure cooker. The size of the blast depends on the size of the pressure cooker and the amount of explosive placed inside," the memo says. The memo goes on to detail how pressure cooker bombs are made with readily-available materials and can be as simple or as complex as the builder decides. These types of devices can be initiated using b...

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday reimposed the death sentence for By a vote of 6-3, the court rejected defense claims that the judge at Tsarnaev’s 2015 trial improperly restricted the questioning of prospective jurors and was wrong to exclude evidence of a separate crime two years before the bombing. Writing for the majority, Justice Clarence Thomas said trial judges have broad discretion in deciding what questions to ask prospective jurors. “That discretion does not vanish when a case garners public attention.” Tsarnaev’s lawyers did not deny his role in the marathon bombing, but they said he was easily manipulated by his brother, who they called the mastermind. The Justice Department said the evidence of who committed the Waltham killings was unreliable. Tamerlan Tsarnaev and another man suspected of having been at the crime scene were both dead by the time of the bombing trial, so there was no way to know for certain what happened. According to the Port Authority, the report of a suspicious package at the WTC PATH Station came in at around 2:14 p.m. The train was in the station for more than an hour before it was found, the sources said, with the Port Authority confirming the station, as well as the Oculus had been evacuated as a precaution. PATH service was temporarily suspended from Hoboken to World Trade Center and No. 1 trains were bypassing the World Trade Center in both directions as the investigation was underway. Services have since resumed on the 1. PATH trains from Newark to the World Trade Center and Hoboken to the World Trade Center have also resumed, although with delays.

Why Use A Pressure Cooker To Build A Bomb?

They are cheap, easy to build and inconspicuous. And as the explosions this week at the Boston Marathon show, pressure cooker bombs can be devastatingly effective weapons. But why would someone place a bomb inside a common kitchen implement? As "It works using basic principles of science: Water normally boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit — and doesn't get hotter. But under pressure, it boils at about 242 F and stays there. Raising the boiling point lets the food cook at the higher temperature, which cuts cooking time by two-thirds or more." The same principle that increases the boiling point inside a pressure cooker also can be used to amplify the force of an explosive. As NPR science reporter Geoffrey Brumfiel notes, "If you seal a pressure cooker, the steam builds up in the vessel. It helps to raise the temperature and cook food, but sometimes when the cooker fails, you get a very energetic release." Mercantile Communications/Department of Homeland Security Confiscated pressure cooker IEDs in Malaysia. In the case of a bomb packed with nails and BBs, that "energetic release" propels deadly shrapnel, including pieces of the pressure cooker itself, in all directions, killing or maiming anyone in the blast path. The pressure cooker's ability to amplify an explosion turns common black powder or smokeless powder into a much deadlier weapon, according to Denny Kline, a former FBI explosives expert and instructor in forensics at its academy. He told The Associated Press that black...
