Maharashtra Professional Tax slab changes – 2023 Maharashtra has revised its Professional tax slabs w.e.f 1st April 2023. In his article, we will cover all the changes made. Profession Tax is levied on salaried and self-employed individuals who earn income working in the private sector or the government sector, in various states in India. It is subject to a minimum limit of income and charges differ as per the applicable slab rates of the states. Note: Senior citizens and handicapped persons with more than 40% physical or mental disability are exempted from paying Professional tax in Maharashtra. How can one pay Professional Tax in Maharashtra For a salaried person The professional tax for a salaried person is deducted directly by the employer and deposited with the municipal corporation. For non-salaried individual Non-salaried or self-employed individuals can pay the Professional tax directly to the government via tax collection centres or through PT online portal. New changes in the Professional Tax slab in the year 2023 Major changes in the tax slab this year have been made towards the tax slabs of women. As per the notified schedule of the amended professional tax act, the limit for deducting professional tax has been increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 25,000 for female employees. Article 246 of the Constitution of India 1949, empowers the Parliament to introduce laws governing taxes on income. Whereas, Article 276 empowers State to levy professional tax on professions, trades, callings & employment. Even though States are empowered to impose Professional Tax, not all States impose such tax. Professional Tax may be levied up to maximum of Rs 2,500/- on any individual or entity in a Financial Year. Professional Tax being a state subject, State-wise Professional Tax Rates for Financial Year 2023-24 varies from State to State.
