Onion Growers Association preparing report for national

PUNE: As the Maharashtra State Onion Growers Association and onion farmers across the state are facing a financial crisis due to the drop in onion rates, the organisation is now preparing a report on various issues related to onion farming which will be submitted to the central and state governments next month. While there are lakhs of onion farmers in the state, especially in the three main districts of Nashik, Ahmednagar and Pune; followed by Dhule, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Beed, Solapur and other districts, the summer onion yield on nearly 30,000 hectares of land has been damaged due to unseasonal rain and fluctuating weather in the last couple of months and is going to be sold at very low rates. There are around 4 lakh onion farmer-members of the Onion Growers Association from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka and Rajasthan. (HT PHOTO) Bharat Dighole, president of the Maharashtra State Onion Growers Association, said, “The onion farmers were not united for a long period and so, we formed this association. Also, there is no national-level policy related to onion farming; its production and sale across the country and abroad. Currently, we get Rs800 per quintal on an average but our demand is that we should get more than Rs2,000 per quintal. We are now preparing a detailed report on issues faced by onion farmers and how they do not get the desired rates in the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) markets across the country. We are going to submit...

The IMD has placed Odisha, western Maharashtra and Telangana on ‘red’ alert. In Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, southern Karnataka and Gujarat will be on ‘orange’ alert till August 11. On Monday, Odisha, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Gangetic West Bengal are expected to receive intense rain. In the week ahead, the Bay of Bengal will remain rough and produce squally winds with speeds ranging between 45 – 65 km/hour, which will mainly sweep along Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Pune climate: weather by month, temperature, rain

Climate chart - Pune The climate of Pune (or Poona) is tropical, with a rainy season from June to October, due to the monsoon, and a dry season from November to May. On average, the monsoon in Pune runs from 10 June to 11 October. The city is located in south-central India, in the state of Maharashtra, at the confluence of the Mutha and Mula rivers, at 18 degrees north latitude and 570 meters (1,870 feet) above sea level. A little to the north is the city of Pimpri-Chinchwad, which has the same climate as Pune. Instead, on the coast, about 110 km (70 mi) to the north-west is the city of Mumbai. Due to the altitude and the proximity of the mountains, in winter there are strong temperature variations between night and day, and at night it can get cold. In February 2012, the temperature dropped to 4.6 °C (40.3 °F). Before the monsoon the temperature rises, and from April to early June, on the hottest days, it can exceed 40 °C (104 °F). In late April 2019 it reached 43 °C (109.5 °F). Although the distance from the coast of the Arabian Sea is not great, the summer monsoon comes only in part because it is hampered by the Western Ghats, the coastal range. Furthermore, the dry season is long, so the landscape is semi-arid. Pune is in the path of tropical cyclones. Typically, cyclones occur from April to December, with two intensity peaks before and after the monsoon (from late April to early June and in October-November). This area of India is generally not directly affected by cy...
