After a tenure of just a little more than three months for Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has handed over the department to Harjot Bains after the expansion of the Cabinet yesterday. The Education Department, particularly schools, proved to be a challenging assignment for all Punjab ministers since the SAD government (2007-17) and the Congress government later. Several scams related to textbooks, laboratories, scholarships, printing of books have surfaced in the department. Agitation by teachers have been continuing for several years. Harjot Bains continues to hold charge of the important departments of Mines and Geology, Jails and Water Resources. Class XII passout, Chetan Singh Jouramajra has been given the charge of the Health and Family Welfare Department, besides Medical Education and Research. The department was earlier headed by Dr Vijay Singla, who was removed after his name cropped up in a corruption case. Jouramajra also gets the Elections Department. MLA raises SC students' issues with Education Minister Harjot Bains : The Tribune India

Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 7 Congress MLA from Adampur Sukhwinder Kotli on Tuesday met Education Minister Harjot Bains in Chandigarh on the issues affecting Dalit community students. The MLA took up the cases wherein recently some SC students were not allowed to take examination since the state government had not paid their fee under SC Post Matric Scholarship Scheme. The minister reportedly assured Kotli that no SC student would face such a discrimination at the time of admission or appearing in examination. A prominent Dalit leader, Kotli said he would also take up the recent issue of use of force by the Punjab Police upon the SC students while they were sitting on a dharna at BSF Chowk last week. He said he would meet the Punjab DGP and ask him to take action against the DSP, SHO and the ASI who acted against the Dalit students. Kotli said he had come across issues wherein some candidates of general category had taken jobs reserved for the Dalits by getting readied fake SC certificates. He said he would take up these matters in the next Vidhan Sabha session.

Punjab To connect with cultural roots school students asked to learn Punjabi words during summer vacation

Chandigarh, Jun 3 (PTI) The Punjab education department has asked students from classes one to eight to learn one Punjabi word every day during their summer vacation, an initiative, it said, will help them connect with their cultural roots. Punjab School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Saturday said students of classes one to eight in government and private schools will find and memorise one word of the Punjabi language every day. Similarly, students of classes five to eight have also been asked to remember Punjabi names of months and their relation with seasons, said Bains in a statement issued here. He said pre-nursery children have been given homework on physical activity and hygiene during their summer holidays from June 1 to June 30. The minister said the purpose of this decision is to make school students aware about the rich cultural heritage of the state through Punjabi words. He said the curiosity to discover disappearing Punjabi words and develop an understanding of them, will strengthen their desire to connect with their cultural roots.

CHANDIGARH: Taking a prompt action on the reports of teachers facing difficulties for getting transfer due to mismatch of data, Punjab School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Sunday announced one more special chance for transfer within district to such teachers. Many teachers have brought the matter into the notice of the Education Minister that due to mismatch of the data regarding transfer, they were deprived of getting transfer. However, many other teachers vociferously raised the demand to get transfer on the stations vacated during the first round of transfers. These teachers demanded that they should be given one more chance to get transfer within district so that they will be able to get the posting on nearby stations. Divulging details Mr. Bains said that keeping this demand in mind, the department has decided to extend one more chance to these teachers/computer faculty/employees whose data has not been matched properly, to correct the same. He said that that after that concerned school head/DDO will verify the data before May 22, 2023 till 02.00 PM. These teachers can select the station for transfer till May 22, 2023 from 02.00 pm to 06.00 pm after log in on e-Punjab portal. It is worth mention here that total 5172 teachers had applied for transfer within district, out of which 2651 transfer orders have been issued.
