Defamation case: Special court summons to Rahul Gandhi, Siddaramaiah, and DK Shivakumar

Defamation case: Special court summons to Rahul Gandhi, Siddaramaiah, and DK Shivakumar S Keshavprasad, the state secretary of the BJP, filed the complaint against the leaders on May 9 for publishing an advertisement that claimed the then-incumbent BJP "had looted" Rs 1.5 lakh crore from the state and extracted 40% commission from government contracts. S Keshavprasad, the state secretary of the BJP, filed the complaint against the leaders on May 9 for publishing an advertisement that claimed the then-incumbent BJP "had looted" Rs 1.5 lakh crore from the state and extracted 40% commission from government contracts. The complaint claimed that the advertisement damaged the BJP's reputation. The special court, which only hears criminal cases involving current and former lawmakers, has set July 27 as the recording date for statements. Tweeting that it is simple to mislead people by speaking falsely and advertising falsely, the BJP praised the court's decision. The party stated, "The court will award the appropriate punishment." ***** During the election campaign, the Congress had repeatedly cornered the BJP regarding the 40% commission charge. Since the State Contractors' Association made the claim in an April 2014 letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the party has been making this claim. A contractor had killed himself, claiming that he couldn't pay his bills because of the high bribes needed. Two days after Siddaramaiah took office, former CM Basavaraj Bommai slammed the n...

Rahul Gandhi is coming face to face with India on Bharat Jodo Yatra. What will he make of it?

By Dev Goswami: Clown Prince to Pappu. Rahul Gandhi has historically struggled with the one thing that's a politician's bread and butter: Public perception. Many argue - justifiably so - that most of it is because of a narrative drummed up by the Congress's principal rival, the Bharatiya Janata Party, coupled with Gandhi's and his team's failure to effectively counter it. OPINION | With Bharat Jodo Yatra, that seems to be changing. For the first time in his 52-year-old life, Rahul Gandhi is where a politician must be: Among the masses. It's not a radical idea, of course. That a leader needs to know the masses to be successful is the most obvious career advice a politician can get. So far so good. What's crucial now is what Rahul Gandhi does with the opportunity that a mega walkathon provides. On the Bharat Jodo Yatra trail, Gandhi is, on a daily basis, coming face to face with those who hold the key to his political future -- the people of India. He is coming face to face with their lives, the myriad problems that afflict them, and their many aspirations. He is coming face-to-face with Bharat. Unlike Prime Minister Narendra Modi (or other such politicians with similar appeal), Rahul Gandhi will never be able to add the enviable qualification of "coming from the masses" on his CV. But with Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul Gandhi finally has a chance to overcome the handicap of his privileged birth and subsequent Lutyens upbringing. On the Bharat Jodo Yatra trail, Rahul Gandhi is co...

SP founder member joins Congress, says Rahul Gandhi only one fighting corruption

By Siraj Qureshi: Samajwadi Party leader and founder member Chandra Prakash Rai joined the Congress party on Thursday. Rai told India Today that he joined the Congress party because Rahul Gandhi seems to be the only one who is fighting against corruption and fascism. He was a Minister of State during the SP regime in Uttar Pradesh, but kept away from active politics for the last three years. HISTORY WITH MULAYAM SINGH YADAV Rai had maintained a close relationship with Samajwadi Party founder and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister late Mulayam Singh Yadav. In 1967, when Mulayam Singh Yadav was elected as an MLA for the first time by contesting from the Jaswant Nagar seat, Rai had managed the election campaign. ALSO READ | When Mulayam Singh Yadav formed the Samajwadi Party in 1992, he appointed Rai as the party's founding general secretary. However, differences with Mulayam Singh Yadav led to Rai's departure from the SP in 1994-95. Although he briefly joined the Congress during that time, he ultimately returned to the Samajwadi Party and assumed the position of national secretary in 1997. In 2006, when Mulayam Singh Yadav was the UP CM, Rai was appointed Minister of State. When Akhilesh Yadav became the CM in 2012, Rai again became the Minister of State, but with the defeat of the SP in 2014, he became disillusioned with the party and left. In 2017, Rai returned to the Samajwadi Party, but joined the Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party in 2018 as the chief spokesperson. The party...

On BJP calling Rahul Gandhi 'Jack Dorsey's puppeteer', Opposition MP's reply

As the BJP on Tuesday hinted at Rahul Gandhi's role behind BJP's Sambit Patra posted a cartoon saying there is no point in guessing who is pulling the strings of Jack Dorsey. BJP's Sambit Patra shared a cartoon in which Rahul Gandhi is seen as a puppeteer with the strings pulling Jack Dorsey. "No points for guessing, we all know who is pulling the strings," Sambit Patra tweeted. "Not an MP, not a minister, not the PM, not the Opposition Party President. Just a citizen and yet can control the strings, as per this tweet. Isn't that a spectacular failure of PM and GoI?!" Shiv Sena (Uddhab Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote. 'Many requests around farmers' protests' In an interview on a YouTube channel, Jack Dorsey said when he was heading Twitter, the company received many requests around farmers' protests. The Indian government threatened Twitter with raids on employees and shutdown threats if it did not take down posts flagged by the government. "It manifested in ways such as: 'We will shut Twitter down in India', which is a very large market for us; 'we will raid the homes of your employees', which they did; And this is India, a democratic country," Jack Dorsey said. The government dismissed the claims and IT minister of state Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that Twitter at that time was misusing its power. Indian court denies Rahul Gandhi's appeal to stay defamation conviction

AHMEDABAD, India, April 20 (Reuters) - A court in India's western state of Gujarat on Thursday rejected Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's petition seeking a stay of conviction in a defamation case, fuelling doubts over whether he will be able to contest an election due next year. Gandhi was convicted last month in a case brought by a state lawmaker from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after comments he made that were deemed to be insulting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other people surnamed Modi. "The Surat district court has not granted a stay on Rahul Gandhi's conviction," Naishadh Desai, a local Congress leader and lawyer, told reporters outside the court room. "We are going to challenge the decision in Gujarat High Court tomorrow. We have full faith that the judiciary will uphold justice and save democracy," he said. While Thursday's ruling was a setback for Gandhi, his jail sentence remained suspended until he exhausts all legal challenges. Gandhi, 52, lost his parliamentary seat in March after being convicted and sentenced to two years in jail for comments made during an election campaign rally in 2019. In India, lawmakers sentenced to jail terms of two years or more are barred from running for election. Senior Congress leader and Supreme Court lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters that the party was confident that a superior court such as the high court or Supreme Court would change the ruling. "Rahul Gandhi has not spoken anything remotely defamato...
