New Delhi: The number of Twitter followers of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi have almost stopped growing since August 2021. His total number of followers hover around the 20 million mark currently. Gandhi alleges it may have something to do with him being a vocal Opposition leader the government wants to silence. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year crossed 70 million Twitter followers and the BJP says he is the “ most followed head of state ” in the world. BJP chief J P Nadda Wednesday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of trying to tarnish the country’s image on foreign soil with his recent remarks on Indian democracy and reminded him that it was his grandmother Indira Gandhi who had imposed the Emergency. Nadda was addressing a rally here as part of the BJP’s ‘Maha Jan Sampark’ programme to mark the completion of nine years of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre. Earlier, the BJP president made similar remarks at a rally in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district. By Press Trust of India: The BJP has filed a defamation complaint against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court. The special court exclusively to deal with criminal cases related to elected former and sitting MPs/MLAs has taken cognisance of the offences under Sections 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the Indian Penal Code and posted the case for recording the sworn statement on July 27. The private complaint alleging false claims in advertisements tarnishing the image of the BJP was filed by the party's state secretary S Keshavaprasad on May 9. According to the complaint, the advertisement released by the KPCC in major newspapers on May 5, 2023 in the run-up to the Assembly election claiming that the then incumbent BJP government indulged in "40 per cent corruption" and had looted Rs 1.5 lakh crore in the previous four years was "baseless, prejudiced and defamatory".
