It couldn't challenge Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha. Based on early estimates, it appears that Akshay Kumar is looking at a hattrick of flops in 2022, with his latest release, By comparison, Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha — a fellow Independence Day weekend release — is estimated to have made Rs 10.7 crore on its opening day. But that film was produced on a bigger budget, across more locations, and required heavy visual effects work. Raksha Bandhan, on the other hand, was produced in a manner that has become typical for an Akshay Kumar-starrer — across one schedule, over a couple of months. Both Raksha Bandhan and Laal Singh Chaddha arrive at a particularly unfortunate time for Bollywood, with multiple back-to-back high-profile flops. According to a Business Insider survey, only one in five respondents (22%) are planning to watch a movie in the cinema hall or multiplex in the next 60 days. For Akshay, the situation is particularly dire since he already has two of ...

Raksha Bandhan review

I ndian film-maker Aanand L Rai gives his very mediocre melodrama a campaigning message about the culture of dowry-paying, though you’ll have to sit through a lot of un-feminist movie to reach it. In truth, Raksha Bandhan is primarily a vehicle for Kumar plays Lala, a chaat seller in Old Delhi. Like Mrs Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, Lala is in the predicament of finding husbands for his four sisters. He promised their mother on her deathbed not to tie the knot himself until marrying them off. The financial burden of saving for four dowries is a strain, and although his childhood sweetheart Sapna (Bhumi Pednekar) is waiting devotedly for him, her father issues an ultimatum: he’s got six months to offload his sisters. What follows is some painfully unsubtle comedy poking fun at Lala’s apparently unmarriageable sisters. The exception is the eldest (Sadia Khateeb), conventionally beautiful and obedient Gayatri. Next in line Durga (Deepika Khanna) is overweight; Lakshmi (Smrithi Srikanth) is dark skinned and thus deemed unattractive; the youngest, Saraswati (Sahejmeen Kaur), is a scrappy tomboy. The script throws out a line or two in their defence: in one scene Durga refuses to be bodyshamed. But mostly, it feels like the audience is being invited to laugh along at their expense. The film’s message about women being in control of their own destiny comes too late to rescue these four; they are more a collection of stereotypes than actual characters. Really, all the development ...

India Box Office: ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, ‘Raksha Bandhan’ Score Low

A look at the box office performance of Hindi films 'Laal Singh Chaddha' and 'Raksha Bandhan'. ZEE STUDIOS/AKPPL Akshay Kumar’s latest outing, Raksha Bandhan and Aamir Khan-starrer Laal Singh Chaddha have both scored poorly at the Indian ticket windows. Both the films saw a holiday special release and hit theatres on August 11, on the occasion of the Indian festival of Rakhi. The holiday release gave them an extended weekend of five days but neither of the films managed to impress the audiences. Raksha Bandhan made an opening collection on Thursday $1.02 million and it dipped on Friday, as it was a working day. The film earned $0.803 million on the second day while the third day collection stood at $0.817 million. It is the worst opening an Akshay Kumar film got this year. The film managed to earn mere $4.2 million over the extended weekend. His last release - Bachchan Pandey also had a dismal show at the box office, but it scored a better opening with $1.5 million. The film that released in March this year, could barely cross $6 million in one week at the box office. Raksha Bandhan traces the story of Lala Kedarnath (Kumar) who is struggling to earn enough money in order to pay for the dowries and get his four sisters married off. Bhumi Pednekar features in the film opposite Kumar while Sadia Khateeb, Sahejmeen Kaur, Deepika Khanna and Smrithi Srikanth play his sisters. Meanwhile, Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha scored slightly better at the ticket windows. After an opening col...
