As most people from this country would know, Rakshabandhan ( Raksh is a Hindu (traditionally) ceremonial annual festival, occurring on the Purnima (full moon night) of the Hindu lunar month of Shravan (Gregorian – August), and the central idea of which is the bond shared between a brother and a sister. Raksha (lit. Protection) and Bandhan (lit. Bondage, but used as bond), together the nomenclature means The Bond of Protection. Called by different names in different regions, this festival is celebrated throughout the Indian subcontinent, of course with ritualistic differences. The most consistent and common theme being that of tying a protective thread (an amulet) around the wrist of the brother by his sister as a symbol of protection and thereby receiving blessings and presents in return accompanied by a promise of life-long protection by the brother. The idea is to dedicate a separate day for this sacred relationship of a brother and sister and strengthen the bond between the two. It celebrated on full moon day of shravan month. Full moon day of Shravan is also celebrated as Narali Purnima. On Raksha Bandhan day, sisters perform the ‘aarti’ and apply tika on brothers’ forehead. The main ceremony on this occasion is the tying of ‘Rakhi’ (a silk thread) by a sister on her brother’s wrist symbolizing her love for him. Meaning:In the mind, speech and body, overflowing with the nectar of merits; pleasing all the three worlds with their rows of helping acts; always feeling gladness in the heart by extolling the minutest atom-like virtues of others as big as a mountain, and praising them everywhere’ How many men are noble like this? Meaning: In this world, the deer remains happy by eating grass. The hunter hates it for no reason (and kills it). The fish remains happy by living inside the water. The fisher-man hates it for no reason (and kills it). The good man remains happy by contentment. The malicious hate him for no reason (and try to insult him always)!
