By India Today Web Desk: Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil was a freedom fighter who played an active role in India’s freedom struggle. In memory of his contribution towards India’s independence, June 11 is celebrated as his birth anniversary. He was a revolutionary personality and an inspiration to the youngsters of the country. He wrote motivational poems and pamphlets for young people. He used to sell his books to buy weapons needed for the revolution. History: Pandit Bismil was born to a Brahmin family in 1897 in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He was born to Muralidhar and Moolrani. His father, Muralidhar, was working in Shahjahanpur Municipality. They had very limited earnings and their family struggled a lot to make ends meet. He joined Arya Samaj despite his father's disapproval. He was known for being a part of the Manipuri conspiracy in 1918 and the Kakori incident in 1925. The Kakori incident was one of the important events of Jung-e-Azadi. He also had a command of Urdu and the Hindi language, which made him a prominent revolutionary. He was also a multilingual translator and his famous poem Manipuri’s Pratigya became very famous. December 18, 1927- Gorakhpur Central Jail. A middle-aged woman was waiting to see her son. Her husband and another young man too joined her. Her son was brought out in chains, and when he saw his mother, tears rolled down his eyes. It was his last day, tomorrow he would be hanged to death. As the mother saw the tears, she said, “What is this, my son? I had thought of my son as a great hero. I was thinking that the British Government would shiver at the very mention of his name. I never thought that my son would be afraid of death.” To which her son replied “Mother these are not tears of fear, these are the tears of joy, of beholding such a brave mother like you”. The son was Ram Prasad Bismil, the mastermind behind the Kakori Rail Dacoity case, the man who popularized these immortal lines.: “Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamare dil mein hai, dekhna ki zor kitna baazu-e-qatil mein hai” ( The desire for revolution is in our hearts, we shall see how much strength lies in the arms of the murderer”). A day before his death, revolutionary and freedom fighter Ram Prasad Bismil wrote a letter to his friend. Along with it, he also penned a poem saying if he had to die in the service of the nation, he would gladly do it a thousand times. The next day, 19 December 1927, the 30-year-old Bismil was hanged at Gorakhpur Jail. A man of many talents, his words have travelled from generation to generation, across states, languages, and beyond. His language of agitation against colonialism was poetry and he sought nothing but freedom for his beloved country till the last breath. He was born on 11 June 1897 in a non-descript village in Shahjahanpur to Mulridhar and Moolmati in Uttar Pradesh. Bismil’s love for poetry began at an early age when he joined the Arya Samaj. He began penning patriotic verses in Hindi and Urdu under several pen names like Agyat, Ram, and Bismil. A patriot from a young age, it was the Mera Janm’. After the death sentence of Bhai Parmanand (which was later commuted), he joined a revolutionary group headed by Pandit Genda Lal Dixit at the age of 19.
