Now, Mumbaikars can visit the city's iconic Jijamata Udyan zoo 'virtually' through their Youtube channel

Mumbai: One of the city's landmark tourist spots, the Veer Mata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan And Zoo, also known as Rani Baug, is all set to go digital amid the nationwide lockdown. The zoo authorities, who had been mulling over the idea for quite some time, decided to move ahead with it after a video of two Royal Bengal tigers Shakti and Karishma went viral on the internet recently and took social media by storm. Dr Sanjay Tripathi, director of the Byculla zoo, told Mirror Online, "Yes, we are planning to take the beloved zoo of the Mumbaikars on the digital platforms. Due to the lockdown, all our educational activities and awareness programmes have been shut. So, we are planning to take everything online, so that people do not miss out on these things. Not only Youtube, but we are also planning to have an official Twitter handle of our own so that we can connect with the people in a better way." The tiger beating the heat Tripathi informed that the pair of tigers were procured from the Siddharth Zoo in Aurangabad under an exchange programme in February. The zoo, which has not had a tiger for a very long time, has recreated a Ranthambore terrain-based landscape for its beloved felines. "The Ranthambore National Park is renowned for its tiger population and has one of the best landscapes for tigers. Also, it is unique in the way that it is the first tiger exhibi...

The foundation of this lush green space was laid way back in 1861, and it was opened to public a year later. The highlight, however, is not the link to the British Raj — it was first named Victoria Gardens — but for its kaleidoscope of flora and fauna. It has over 3,000 trees from around hundreds of species of plant and tree families. There are around 853 species of plant belonging to 149 families and around 276 tree species. One can spot an enormous clock tower standing stately at the entrance of the garden designed in the Italian style, betraying its 19th century origin. And not just this, it is also host to a colony of India’s largest bat, the Indian flying fox. “There are some exotic species and flower plants which blossom during this month,” says Asif Khan, bird expert, Bombay...
