The Ranji Trophy 2022-23 marks the return of senior men’s domestic First Class cricket in India. This year, a total of 38 teams will participate in the 88th edition of the prestigious tournament which will be held in the traditional format after two years of hiatus. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition was not held in 2020–2021 and in the 2021-22 season, it was played in a scaled-back format. The Ranji Trophy 2022-23 will consist of 135 matches, beginning on 13 December 2022 and will continue till 20 February 2023. Madhya Pradesh won the 2021-22 edition by defeating Mumbai by 6 wickets in the summit game. However, Mumbai are the most successful side in history with as many as 41 titles. Ranji Trophy groups announced; final in June

Defending champion Saurashtra has been clubbed with domestic powerhouse Mumbai in Group D while Tamil Nadu will enter as the second-seeded team in Group H in a curtailed edition of the Ranji Trophy, set to commence from February 17 at nine different venues. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah confirmed the groups, venues and the tournament format in a letter to all its affiliated units on Friday. The BCCI, after considering the possibility of letting top teams as many assured games as possible, has decided to the format of each of the nine group table-topper qualifying for the knockouts. The table-topper from Plate will face the lowest ranked of the eight qualifiers from Elite group (criteria to be decided). Besides the playing conditions, Shah informed that the detailed match schedule will “soon” be communicated along with COVID-19 guidelines.
