Every year on October 31, National Unity Day, or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is commemorated. The Government of India established the day in 2014 to recognise the birth anniversary of India's Iron Man, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This year, India will observe the 146th birth anniversary of the freedom fighter. Patel was a key figure in India's independence struggle and the country's merger from 560 princely states. He served as India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister after the country gained independence. National Unity Day is observed to honour Patel's efforts to bring the country together. National Unity Day: History The Government of India has erected a massive statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel beside the Narmada River in Gujarat to commemorate him. On the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, the Indian government declared National Unity Day to honour his hardships and sacrifices as the country's first Deputy Prime Minister. New Delhi [India], October 29 (ANI): On the occasion of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, a musical band of tribal children from the Ambaji town of Banaskantha district, Gujrat, is all set to perform in the presence of PM Narendra Modi during his visit on October 31, 2022. PM Modi will visit Kevadia, Gujrat, on October 31 to pay homage to the Iron man of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 147th birth anniversary. Post that he will be participating in the Ekta Diwas Parade and will interact with Officer Trainees belonging to various Civil Services undergoing the Foundation Course at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. Previously, in September 2022, during Modi’s earlier visit to Ambaji, Gujarat, the same musical band welcomed him at a public event when he laid the foundation stone for various development projects worth over Rs7200 crores. To encourage the young children, before the public event, PM Modi interacted with the young band members, clicked photographs with them, and appreciated their performance after the event. Also, post the event on September 2022, Modi ensured that the band members were invited to the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas on October 31, 2022, to participate and perform on the historic day. New Delhi: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Home Minister, played a crucial role in persuading many princely states to join the Union of India. Because of his efforts towards national integration, Vallabhbhai Patel is often referred to as the “Iron Man of India ''. To honour his legacy, the government in 2014 declared October 31, his birth anniversary, as the National Unity Day or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas. History Since 2014, the government has been organising events and programmes on October 31 to honour Vallabhbhai Patel's contributions. Declaring his birth anniversary as National Unity Day in 2014, the Home Ministry said, “This day will be marked as a reminder of the strength of our nation and will highlight the resilience of our country towards dangers posed against our security, unity, and integrity.” In his memory, The Statue of Unity, a colossal symbol of India's unity, stands tall on the banks of the Narmada river in Vadodara, Gujarat. The statue was unveiled in 2018. This year we will celebrate Vallabhbhai Patel's 146th birth anniversary. Vallabhbhai Patel joined the Indian freedom movement to oppose British rule.
