Weighing in at over 200 lbs., these snakes are usually slow moving, spending most of their day at rest or waiting for their prey. Reticulated pythons are typically found on the ground, but they may also enjoy swimming in nearby bodies of water. They are typically regarded as being an aggressive species of snake because it is difficult to regularly handle them. Housing the Reticulated Python Because adult reticulated pythons are extremely large, a typical snake terrarium will simply not do. Reticulated pythons require a large, custom enclosure that measures about two feet wide by three feet tall by eight feet long, a small bedroom, or a walk-in closet. A hide box or log of some sort should be available in the enclosure at all times. Security is of the utmost concern; these large snakes are very strong and can escape from an enclosure that is not made of strong materials. Latches or locks shoul...

Reticulated Python

Popular Varieties Reticulated pythons—called “retics” or just “tics” for short—are a subspecies of the Python family and as such don’t have any officially recognized subspecies of their own. They do have a couple of dwarf subspecies: Python reticulatus jampeanus and Python reticulatus saputrai. Snake breeders have produced several retic varieties, or morphs, but most of these morphs cannot be found in the wild. Reticulated Python Size Reticulated pythons fall under the category of “giant snakes” and are among the largest species of python in the world. That being said, they still weigh less than other giant snakes of equal lengths. Depending on gender, environmental conditions, and specific morphs, retics can range in length from 6 feet (1.8 m) for dwarf males to 20+ feet (6+ m) for large females. On average, males reach between 10 and 14 feet (3-4.2 m). Females grow to at least 16 feet (4.8 m) and can exceed 20 feet (6 m) in length, with the record length being 33 feet (9.9 m). Fully-grown female retics can weigh 250 pounds (more than 112 kg) or more. Reticulated pythons grow quickly and can exceed 12 feet (3.6 m) in just two years under optimal feeding regimens. Reticulated Python Lifespan Captive-bred reticulated pythons are long-lived snakes; they can live to anywhere between 12 and 20 years. Reticulated Python Appearance Reticulated pythons have a complex color pattern, marked by a diamond or saddle pattern and a black stripe running from the top of the head to the ti...

Are Reticulated Pythons Aggressive? – Regarding Reptiles

Captive reticulated python/Picture courtesy of Brady Typically when I write an article about reptiles, specifically concerning their general nature and behaviors, I prefer to describe them as defensive rather than aggressive. Reticulated pythons ( Malayopython reticulatus) are a little more unique. They can certainly be defensive, but they have also been known to kill humans. I’m not talking about a defensive bite that results in a human death. I mean a full fledged attack where the human is actually eaten. Are reticulated pythons aggressive? Reticulated pythons are large predatory animals. As such, they prefer large prey which has been known to include humans, so should be considered aggressive. When they are kept as pets raised in captivity they tend to be more docile, but can still be somewhat unpredictable with a tendency to be more temperamental than many other python species. You don’t need to be scared of these snakes, but you should be cautious around them. Reticulated Python Attacks On People Stories of people being bitten by snakes are not uncommon. What’s often misunderstood is that nearly all of these bites are defensive in nature. I remember a news story about a boy who was bitten by a black mamba while minding his own business playing on a big rock. Apparently the mamba came up behind him and bit him on the back. If I had to guess I’d say the boy really was minding his own business, and more than likely didn’t even notice the snake was there. The truth howeve...
