Republic Day 2022: 6 Army personnel to be awarded Shaurya Chakra

On the eve of the 73rd Republic Day, six Indian Army personnel were awarded the country's third highest military bravery medal, the Shaurya Chakra. A total of 317 Indian Army men have received gallantry and meritorious medals, including the Bar to Sena medal and Mention in Despatches. The Junior Commissioned Officer tactically deployed his team and engaged with the terrorists with effective fire, denying them to break contact and escape. Amid the intense firefight, he observed two terrorists trying to break the cordon; the Junior Commissioned Officer displaying tactical acumen, crawled to the flank and brought down effective fire, eliminating one terrorist in the face to face gunfight. The other terrorists retaliated with Under Barrel Grenade Launcher fire and hand grenades in which the Junior Commissioned Officer sustained multiple injuries and started bleeding profusely. On the eve of the 73rd Republic Day, as many as six personnel of the Indian Army were awarded the Shaurya Chakra, the third-highest peacetime gallantry award in the country, in recognition of their distinguished service. New Delhi, Jan 25 (PTI) Five Indian Army soldiers were posthumously awarded Shaurya Chakra, the third highest peacetime gallantry award, on Tuesday for showing exceptional bravery while combating terrorists, according to an official statement. Moreover, one serving Assam Rifles soldier was awarded Shaurya Chakra on the occasion of Republic Day for showing exceptional bravery during an anti-insurgent operation in Assam, the Indian Army’s statement noted. The Indian Army on Tuesday released a list of Army personnel awarded for their gallantry and distinguished service on the occasion of Republic Day 2022. Along with the six personnel who have been awarded Shaurya Chakra, 19 personnel have been awarded Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), 33 have been awarded Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and 77 have been awarded Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) for their distinguished service, the Army noted.
