Rishabh Pant’s Mercedes SUV accident: Why fires in modern cars are harder to control

Pant, reportedly lost control of the vehicle and drove over a divider for several meters, the impact was so strong that the cricketer was thrown out of the SUV’s windscreen. The vehicle immediately caught fire and was charred within minutes. Pant, on the other hand, was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he is currently being treated for injuries on the head and a ligament injury in the right ankle. The fact that the SUV caught fire and got charred to the bones so quickly is a reminder of how quickly a fire can spread in modern cars. However, it should be considered that it's very hard for modern internal combustion cars to catch fire but in the rare event that they do go ablaze, the fire is almost certain to engulf the vehicle very quickly. Cues can be taken from the recent incident in Delhi, where a revengeful man trying to put one Maruti Suzuki Ertiga on fire, ended up torching 20 vehicles that were just parked near the burning vehicle. Similar to Pant’s accident, by the time police and seven fire tenders extinguished the fire, all the 20 cars parked in the third-level basement of Delhi were gutted, some only had their chassis left at the spot as a remaining part. Both these incidents reiterate t...

Rishabh Pant car crash: Why vehicles catch fire after accidents

While the reason for the crash is not yet known, eyewitnesses and officials on the scene suggest that fog or driver fatigue might be the reason which distracted Pant and led to the crash. Since it was a cold morning and Pant was driving alone which means he might have dozed off, but it is just one of the speculations so far and police are investigating the actual reason behind the accident. One of the most common reasons for vehicles to catch fire is leaks from fuel tanks after a crash or blow. Fuel tank lines are particularly susceptible to rupture if the accident was a severe one. In cases like that of Pant, even a minor leak ignited due to collision or friction can spark a fire. Also, flammable materials apart from the fuel, including engine oil, brake oil, or lubricants, sometimes play a part when exposed to a spark and come in contact with really hot metal parts.
