India Records 1,55,622 Road Accident Deaths In 2022

In 2022, there were 1,55,622 deaths due to road accidents were registered in India and 59.7 per cent of fatalities occurred due to over-speeding. In fact, 62 per cent of these accidents were recorded on just 5 per cent stretch of the highways, hinting that preventive measures need to be taken to reduce accidents on these stretches. The authorities need to identify more such stretches across the country and take preventive measures like revising speed limits, fixing blind spots and even out extreme undulations on these roads which are few of the major reasons of road accidents. Also Read: The Yamuna Expressway connecting Greater Noida and Agra becomes one of the major accident prone during winter. Poor visibility leads to fatal accidents and long pilings of rammed cars on the expressway and as a preventive measure, the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) has decided to lower the speed limit from 100 kmph to 80 kmph on the Expressway during the winter season. For heavy vehicles, the speed limit has been reduced to 60 kmph as they take more time to stop due to their mass. Similarly, such initiatives need to be taken on other highways as well such as the Agra - Lucknow Expressway that too witnesses similar situation during winter. The government is already working on identifying these accident prone areas across the country and revamping these roads in a bid to make it safer.

In India, road fatalities in 2016 were reported at 1,50,785 by the Indian Govt. But, latest report submitted by WHO, estimates the death count at 2,99,091, almost double of what the govt claims. If the WHO report is correct, road accidents result in 821 deaths per day, 34 deaths every hour in India. The Supreme Court of India is concerned over these increased deaths; specially where children and young adults are concerned. The latest road accident report by Indian Govt for 2017 states that an estimated 1.46 lakh fatalities occurred in the past year as compared to 1.51 lakh occurrences in 2016. This decline of 3% over the previous year is set to get better with stronger road safety regulations being passed and stronger policies for enforcement, plans for improvement of road conditions and more public awareness being promoted. Fatal road accidents: National highways most deadly in India; speeding major cause for mishaps

NEW DELHI: Former Mistry was travelling with three family friends: noted gynaecologist Dr. Anahita Pandole, her husband Darius Pandole and Jehangir Pandole, the brother of Darius. Anahita was reportedly speeding while driving the Mercedes when it crashed into a divider on a bridge on the Surya river at Charoti Naka in Palghar, 120 km from Mumbai. Several motorists have complained that the design of the road, lack of proper signages and poor traffic discipline has made the particular highway a hotspot for accidents. Similar complaints are heard about countless other accident-prone stretches across India. India has most fatal road accidents According to data by SaveLife Foundation, India's road crash severity in 2021 was 38.6 (deaths per 100 crashes), up from 37.5 in 2020. The crash severity indicates the risk of road crash fatality. The higher the crash severity, the higher is the risk of death in a road crash. As per available data, in 2016, India ranked first among the top 20 countries for road crashes with crash severity of 31.4, followed by China (29.64).
