Our theme for 2023: Road Safety Heroes The theme of Road Safety Week 2023 (15-21 May) is Be a road safety hero, recognising everyone who helps to make our roads safer and support people after a crash, and explaining how we can all play a part in making journeys safer for everyone. It is also a UN Global Road Safety Week, which has the theme Streets for Life #RethinkMobilityfocusing on transport systems that are built for people, and sustainable and active travel. Some of our hero messages during the week will link to this global theme too. Everyone can be a Road Safety Hero. Road Safety Week 2023 recognises everyone who is working to make our roads safer and support people following crashes - from emergency services to health professionals, transport engineers to school crossing patrols, road workers to community campaigners. It also enables everyone who uses roads to understand how they can take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. During Road Safety Week you can: • Celebrate the work of people who help to reduce casualties and care for people affected by crashes. • Speak up for everyone's right to make safe and healthy journeys where they live. • Join our community of road safety heroes. Some ways you can get involved in Road Safety Week are: • SCHOOLS - help children, young people and parents learn about road safety heroes and why road safety matters, and enable them to speak up for safe and healthy journeys. Safety Week 2023

Building strong teams who work safely is the most important job for everyone on every construction site. It’s our common ground, a belief and a duty that unites us all. And at the center of all the activity, the hazards, and the frontline efforts to keep our team and environment safe on any project are the craft professionals. The dedicated teams with eyes and ears constantly open, on the ground observing, evaluating, and overcoming anything standing in the way of getting home safe at the end of the day. Those who are empowered to step in, speak up, and work together to stop anything that puts our safety at risk. Not all hazards are obvious or easy to recognize even to those who see and face them every day, some are hidden in plain sight. Hidden in the routine things we do every day, hidden in the reactions we have when things don’t go as planned. So we all have the responsibility and obligation to not just speak up, but to act, and to always have each other’s backs. That means craft professionals, management, customers, design professionals and trade partners have to work together to create a supportive environment, to hear and help one another when it’s time to pause, assess, and take charge of anything that could put ourselves or our team in harm’s way. Getting the job done well and as safely as possible is something we take great pride in every day, and we have the collective ability to see into every detail, to recognize when something isn’t right, and to stop these h...

National Road Safety Week 2023: Why it is important to be alert on the road

Every year, National Road Safety Week is observed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways from January 11 to January 17. According to “Traffic Crash Injuries and Disabilities: The Burden on Indian Society”, a report published by the World Bank in 2021, road accident deaths in India are among the highest in the world. To outline the nature of the roads, it is important to note that India is home to only 1 per cent of world’s vehicles, while it accounts for almost 10 per cent of all crash related deaths. Needless to say, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists are among the least protected, and account for nearly half of the deaths, as per the World Bank report. Road safety is a matter of public health concern, and of significant importance to the government. With the goal of reducing the number of accidents due to speeding, potholes, carelessness, and drunk driving, this awareness week is organised every year. During the course of the week, various activities are organised across the nation with the aim of creating, and spreading awareness among the masses, and to allow stakeholders at all levels to participate and contribute to this cause. ADVERTISEMENT History of National Road Safety Week The first National Road Safety Week was organized in 1989 by the National Safety Council which was established by the Ministry of Labour in 1966. For people aged 5-29 years, there is no greater threat to their lives. Globally, 1 of every 4 deaths occur among pedestrians and cyclists. The The World Health Organisation, in collaboration with global partners, is organising this 7th UN Global Road Safety Week (UNGRSW) focussed on sustainable transport and, in particular, the need to shift to walking, cycling and using public transport. Road safety is both a prerequisite for and an outcome of this shift. Safer roads that put vulnerable road users at the heart of design are mandatory. We encourage our partners to mark this year’s week by organizing events and activities and sharing messages and materials on social media that celebrate and call for safer roads with the hashtags: #RethinkMobility #StreetsforLife #RoadSafety Campaign key messages and iRAP tools, training, support and partnerships for UNGRSW and safer roads • There is a desperate need for governments and their partners to rethink mobility Across the world, countries are including 3-star or better targets for safe road infrastructure in their National Road Safety Strategies and Action Plans.
