Casper Ruud dominates Rune at French Open to continue clay resurgence

By the midpoint of the clay-court season, even as he navigated his favourite surface, Casper Ruud was still struggling. A year on from his breakout 2022, when he reached the Still, Ruud kept his head down. He worked hard with a positive attitude and in the biggest clay tournament, his unwavering mentality has afforded him more success. In a highly anticipated reprise of the all-Scandinavian grudge match last year, Ruud impressively held off a late surge from an otherwise tired Holger Rune to reach his second consecutive Read more In this same stage a year ago, Rune and Ruud’s 2022 quarter-final had been billed as a feelgood meeting between two Scandinavian players, a rare sight in the latter rounds of major tournaments. It turned out to be the most fractious match of the championship. Rune accused Ruud of screaming “Jaaa!” in his face in the locker room while gloating, Ruud was bemused by Rune’s questionable sportsmanship and it ended with their parents publicly wading in. This sequel was far less of a spectacle. From the beginning, Rune looked sluggish. He came out of the gate flat, spraying unforced errors off both groundstrokes. As Rune was slow and laboured, continually bailing himself out of points with tired drop shots, he happened to be facing one of the most difficult opponents when in such a mood. Ruud offered his weary opponent no easy points, grinding him down in lengthy rallies and using his heavy forehand. Down two sets, Rune finally came alive. He broke Ruud’...

ATP is investigating Holger Rune for yelling gay slurs during match

The ATP is investigating rising Danish tennis star Holger Rune for yelling gay slurs during a match on the most recent ATP Challenger tour. During the semifinals of the Biella Challenger in Italy, Rune screamed the word “faggot” multiple times: once after his opponent hit the ball out of bounds, and then again after the winning point. When one of Tomas Martin Etcheverry’s returns sailed over the white lines, Rune yelled “you are a pussy player!” and “you are playing like a faggot ass!” Later, he shouted “Allez, faggot!” (“Allez” is translated to “go” in English.) The video is below. The first sequence of slurs comes at the 27-second mark. ATP confirmed Monday it’s launching an investigation into the incident. “ATP is committed to ensuring an inclusive environment for all players, staff and fans, and there is absolutely no room for homophobic remarks in tennis,” the organization said in a statement, Rune, 18, made his ATP debut earlier this year. Rune, Ruud renew Roland Garros rivalry for spot in semi

PARIS, June 6 (Reuters) - Holger Rune is a man in a hurry to hit the Grand Slam big time and the Dane will resume his Scandinavian rivalry with Norwegian Casper Ruud at the French Open on Wednesday, with a spot in the semi-finals at stake. Ruud battled to a four-set win in the previous Paris meeting between the pair at the same stage last year and exchanged a tense handshake at the net with his now 20-year-old opponent, but the drama intensified off the court. He accused Rune of lying after the youngster said that the world number four shouted "ja" (yes) in his face in the locker room following the match, but the duo appear to have put their differences behind them. There was a warmer handshake after Rune rallied to beat Ruud in the Italian Open semi-finals last month, his first victory over the 24-year-old in five meetings. "Obviously there was drama last year and I hope we can make less drama this year," said Rune, who laboured into the quarter-finals with a five-set victory over Argentine Francisco Cerundolo. "We played in Rome. It was a good match. He's a good player. I respect him. There's no problem. We're good. Should be a match without problems, hopefully. Looking forward for it. "I lost last year. It's going to be the same scenario... Hopefully I can turn it around and make it different this year." Last year's runner-up Ruud has eased into the last eight dropping only two sets in his four matches, having put his thrashing by Rafa Nadal in the 2022 final behind him...
