Karan Vyas On Writing Dialogues For Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo, Scoop, 'It's Been A Rollercoaster Ride'

What makes any movie, show or series everlasting are it’s dialogues. Whether it was ‘Hindustan Mein Sanima Hai’ line from Gangs Of Wasseypur or ‘Kitne Aadmi The’ from Sholay, it was the dialogues that brought about the inherent qualities of the character and the script in it’s most nascent form. Karan Vyas, a writer who has worked on numerous projects such as Made In China, Wrong Side Raju, Sameer had lent his dialogue writing expertise in Hansal Mehta’s highly-acclaimed web series Scam 1992. Fast forward to 2023 and his dialogues in Dimple Kapadia’s crime series Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo as well as Scoop is already making ways. In an exclusive interview, Karan Vyas recalled working on the same. Karan Vyas And His Association With Homi Adajania’s Web Series I was working for Maddock already and internally someone from Maddock recommended my name to Homi and I met Homi. We had a good one hour chat and then I was on board like literally and initially I was also a part of the development of the Bible and everything, the whole broad storyline. I also started writing screenplay and all but then the timelines had real issues. I had to go to Canada for family reasons and then I couldn’t continue with the screenplay. Then Covid hit and new writers room was formed. But once all the screenplay was done, I was called back and I did all the dialogues later on. I was a part of Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo for 3 years on and off but that’s how I got it. Karan Vyas Breaks Down The Process Of Di...

Review

The madness is palpable in every frame. But there is very little method to it. And while, for all intents and purposes, you do sign up for Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo expecting a crazy ride, a largely unhinged, inconsistent narrative over eight long episodes does take the joy out of what could have been a heady (pun fully intended) watch. To be honest, Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo, streaming on Disney+Hotstar, did have us at ‘hello’. And that happened right from the unique, off-centre title itself. Added to that was the fact that the series came from Homi Adajania, a maker who, from Being Cyrus to Finding Fanny, has illustrated how he is able to take the tried-and-tested formula and flip it completely on its head, most often successfully. And then, of course, was the premise — a matriarch leading her family of beti and bahus into the business of meth-making — called ‘Flamingo’ here — with the women calling the shots, from cooking up cocaine to running a globally thriving drug cartel, with the men of the family functioning as bumbling, helpless outsiders. This is a subversion of the gender stereotype in every possible way — women flexing power, exercising control, wresting decision-making ability and killing with abandon. The last is definitely neither desirable nor endorsed, but Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo makes it clear from the beginning that it is set in a utopian world (which may, or may not be dystopian). In the garb of a fledgling women’s cooperative manufacturing handicrafts and me...

Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo Review: Dimple Kapadia's Show Is Undeniably Bingeworthy

Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo Review: Dimple Kapadia's Show Is Undeniably Bingeworthy Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo Review: Dimple Kapadia powers the show with an impressively impactful star turn. Radhika Madan etches out a young woman of substance who does not yield an inch in her pursuit of things that matter to her. A thriller spearheaded by Dimple Kapadia as the matriarch of a family of drug dealers in a lawless North Indian desert town, Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo transports us to a world of flawed, tough and unapologetic women who live life queen size wholly on their own terms. The women reap the perks of power but also pay the price for their intrepid ways - the conflict between rewards and reprisals forms the core of the unconventional family drama that is, to an extent, a quirky rural variation on Disney+Hotstar's Aarya. Strong atmospherics, a storyline that brims with emotions and action, a slew of solid performances and a script that delivers a full complement of twists and turns combine to make Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo a satisfying, if not necessarily scintillating, show. The eight-episode Hotstar Specials series alternates between the explosive and the slow burn, the taut and the winding. It follows a dysfunctional family in which nothing is what it appears to be on the surface. That is hardly surprising. Much of the tale unfolds in a secret bunker, the site where the family grows its opium, a place that the rest of the world has no inkling of. Several fraught relationships - ...

Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo Review: Dimple Kapadia, Radhika Madan's show is a riveting cooler with a dash of red

By Anindita Mukherjee: When the name Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo first came about, many thought this was going to be another bittersweet tale of a typical mother-in-law and daughter-in-law story. And something to do with an element called ‘Flamingo’. But when we saw the trailer, we realised that Dinesh Vijan’s production house has brought to its viewers a solid content that’s fully 'loaded'. In the truest sense. That’s Homi Adjania’s directorial, Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo for you. Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo begins in a small town in the fictional town of Rujh. It is led by women. No, we aren’t talking about monarchy here. Savitri AKA Rani Baa, played by Dimple Kapadia, heads a cocaine business and supplies a drug called Flamingo. The chemical formula is known only to her daughter, Radhika Madan (Shanta). Her daughters-in-law, Kajal (Angira Dhar) and Bijlee (Isha Talwar) are both her right hands in the drug racket that also aims at empowering the women of their village. Rani Baa takes great pride in what she does and has built an empire for herself. Which, of course, is in the prying eyes of her haters. When it comes to acting, the entire series is a 10-on-10. Every nitty-gritty has been given the utmost attention. The detailing will mighty impress you - be it costumes, oxidised jewellery or tattoos. The women in the series have a dialect that’s best known to them. The moment any character mouths a word, the prep shows. For instance, Dimple Kapadia, who has forever proven what a gre...
