'Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo' web series review

Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo (Hindi web series) • Cast: Dimple Kapadia, Isha Talwar, Radhika Madan, Deepak Dobriyal, Naseeruddin Shah, and Jimit Trivedi • Director: Homi Adajania • Producer: Dinesh Vijan • Music: Sachin Jigar • No. of episodes: 8 • OTT Platform: Disney+ Hotstar It is always refreshing when the stories are headlined by women — whether they are movies or web series. More so, when they are well made. Homi Adajania’s debut OTT show Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo is one such tale. The director presents four inimitable women who are a treat to watch. What makes the web series even more refreshing is the saas– bahu dynamics avoiding the clichéd tropes that you generally see in Indian television shows. Synopsis This web show is set in a remote village called Hastinapur, somewhere in Rajasthan. Savitri (Dimple Kapadia) runs a company named “Rani Cooperative” which trades in various products. Some of these include jari– booti (herbs), balms and textiles. However, there is also a dark side to this company — drugs. Deepak Dobriyaal in ‘Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo’. (Twitter) “Flamingo” is the name of the drug Rani Cooperative deals in. Savitri operates out of a haveli (mansion) and is surrounded by a team of women, including two daughters-in-law Kajal (Angira Dhar) and Bijliee (Isha Talwar). There is also the rebellious daughter Shanta (Radhika Madan). These four women together run the business with a firm hand and live life on their terms. They are always ahead of their enemies, includ...

'Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo' Season 2 Expectations & Possibilities

Saas, Bahu Aur Flamingo ends on a very lukewarm note, but that does not mean there are no expectations for season two. It concluded with many revelations brought to light so that everyone knew who the boss was. Kajal comes out as the Monk’s mole in Savitri’s family, and she confesses that she actively worked towards destroying Savitri’s business. Kajal has been angry at her mother-in-law because she took her only child away and made Kajal believe that the child was no more. Kajal was later informed by the Monk himself about the child being alive, and this made Kajal switch sides. Her anger has no limits right now, and that’s why she agreed to be the Monk’s informer. Kajal did not think twice because she always pined over the child that she had lost. It is hard to conclude what answers Savitri would have for Kajal’s questions about her child’s fate. On the other hand, it was revealed that Savitri was indeed not dead by the end of the first season. She’d faked her death to find out who in her family were traitors. She was right in her approach because someone had indeed gone behind her back a while ago and managed to leak all the syndicate-related information to Monk. Though the end of the show was frustrating, it still ended with the possibility of many scenarios and storylines that would take place in the second season. Savitri is far from retiring from her job, and now with Kajal’s betrayal, she will have a hard time trusting her family as well. Kajal and Monk would be th...

Saas, Bahu aur Flamingo OTT review: Drug trade

The new Disney+ Hotstar series Saas, Bahu aur Flamingo reveals its winning hand early on: a handicrafts business is a cover for a drug cartel run by an elderly woman. That this woman is played by Dimple Kapadia, a vision in silver jewellery and tattoos, is a bonus. Having introduced us at the onset to the delightful possibility of cocaine smuggled in block-printed quilts and puppets, the series struggles to deliver the highs in subsequent episodes. Created and directed by Homi Adajania, Saas, Bahu aur Flamingo meanders between bloodbaths and buffoonery before settling for one of the oldest plot devices in town: the question of succession. Savitri (Kapadia) produces a hot-selling cocaine variant named Flamingo. Savitri runs her operation with the help of her daughter Shanta (Radhika Madan), her daughters-in-law Kajal (Angira Dhar) and Bijlee (Isha Talwar), her factotum Cheema (Mahabir Bhullar) and her adopted son Dhiman (Udit Arora). A posse of cheerful-looking local women who look like volunteers at a Lijjat co-operative makes Savitri’s Rani Co-Operative company a roaring success. Savitri’s flaky sons Harish (Ashish Verma) and Kapil (Varun Mitra) are away in the United States, unaware that their journeys have been fuelled by cocaine. A visit to the home coincides with twin attacks on Savitri’s base from her old adversary Munk (Deepak Dobriyal) and Mumbai anti-narcotics officer Prashun (Jimit Trivedi).
