The Ashram was then shifted on 17 June 1917 to a piece of open land on the banks of the river Sabarmati. Reasons for this shift included: he wanted to do some experiments in living eg farming, animal husbandry, cow breeding, Khadi and related constructive activities, for which he was in search of this kind of barren land; mythologically, it was the ashram site of Dadhichi Rishi who had donated his bones for a righteous war; it is between a jail and a crematorium as he believed that a satyagrahi has to invariably go to either place. The Sabarmati Ashram (also known as Harijan Ashram) was home to Mohandas Gandhi from 1917 until 1930 and served as one of the main centres of the Indian freedom struggle. Sabarmati Ashram, Ahmedabad, Gujarat Introduction : Sabarmati Ashram, formerly known as 'Satyagraha Ashram", situated in Ahmedabad at the Kocharab Bungalow of Jivanlal Desai, a barrister. Later on it was shifted to the banks of Sabarmati river and then it came to be known as 'Sabarmati Ashram'. Gandhi stayed at the Ashram from 1915 to 1933 later on the Ashram was disbanded. The Ashram is a witness to many important historical events. History: "This is the right place for our activities to carry on the search for Truth and develop Fearlessness- for on one side, are the iron bolts of the foreigners, and on the other, thunderbolts of Mother Nature".- This is how Gandhiji described the site of Sabarmati Ashram when he first visited the place for assessing if it was suitable for carrying out his work. The site of 36 acres was a waste land full of snakes, but the order was not to kill them. The Satyagraha Ashram, later renamed as Harijan Ashram, was started in all earnest with a two-fold purpose-one was to carry on the search for Truth, and the other was to create a non-violent group of workers, who would create a non-violent group of workers, who would organize and help to secure freedom for the country. The Satyagraha Ashram was founded on May 25, 1915 in Ahmedabad at Kochrab, when Gandhi returned from South Africa, with 25 inmates. The Ashram was shifted on the bank of river Sabarmati on 17 June, 1917. Devoted ashramites led a community life in search of Truth and Non-violenc...

Gandhi Ashram (Ahmedabad)

We visited the Sabarmati ashram on our own before the city sightseeing tour started at 1.30 pm. So we spent considerable time in getting the vibe of the place. Peaceful, enchanting and serene; the ashram made us sentimental, as we remembered how that place had played such an important role in our freedom struggle. The specters of Mahatma Gandhi and his supportive wife Kasturba Gandhi undoubtedly guided us through their abode, as we silently glimpsed their residential quarters, sparse belongings, the famed charkha, tableau of the Salt Satyagraha, writings, et al with the backdrop of the concrete waterfront and the tranquil Sabarmati river, glistening in the afternoon sun, with unabashed pride. We bowed down before the statue of the Mahatma in a sitting pose; and were filled with immense respect and love for the great leader and apostle of non-violence. As the first place on the sight-seeing itinerary was the ashram that we had already experienced, we chose to relax for half an hour in the bus after a round of delicious cookies purchased from the kiosk across the road, selling ice-cream and baked snacks. By the way, the City tour bus starts its journey from the opposite side of the Sabarmati Ashram entrance, near this kiosk, adjacent to Toran Hotel. Excellent experience! Specially visited Ahmedabad for Gandhi Ashram and it was totally worth it. India’s freedom struggle and Gandhi’s contributions come alive. The students of history must visit this place. It’s very well mainta...
