IPL 2023: Performance of most expensive buy of each team : The Tribune India

Sam Curran. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) All teams were expecting their top players to step up and deliver their best in the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to fare well. Earlier, at the 2023 mini-auction held in December 2022, some records purchases were done by the franchises to reserve the services of players who had performed exceptionally in international cricket a few months ahead of the important auction. With 2023 having marked its conclusion and CSK emerging as champions, it’s time to analyze the performances of players who got a hefty amount and became the most expensive players for their franchises. Some of them justified their role in their teams with their overwhelming performances while a few players couldn’t live up to the expectations. (Note- GT and RCB have not been considered in this analysis as their most expensive picks got ruled out of the tournament while KKR's second most expensive buy has been considered due to applicable data) Here is the performance of the most expensive players of each team 1. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)- David Wiese (INR 1 crore) At the IPL 2023 auction, Shakib Al Hasan had become the most expensive player in the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) 2023 squad. The Bangladesh legend was picked up for INR 1.5 crore at the auction but in the tournament, he didn’t participate and to fill his shoes, the two-time IPL champions signed up England opener Jason Roy. Following Shakib, Namibia player David Wiese had become the second mo...

Sam Curran sold to Punjab Kings for Rs 18.5 crore, becomes most expensive player ever in IPL auction

Sam Curran was signed by Punjab Kings for a whopping Rs. 18.5 crore at the IPL 2023 auction in Kochi on Friday. He is now the most expensive player ever in the IPL, going past Chris Morris. Curran’s base price was Rs 2 crore. Morris became the IPL’s most expensive ever auction signing after he was was signed for Rs 16.25 crore by Rajasthan Royals in 2021. Yuvraj Singh was the most expensive Indian player at a mini auction when Delhi Daredevils secured him for INR 16 crore in the 2015 auction. Pat Cummins (15.5 in 2020) and Kyle Jamieson (15 in 2021) are the other players to be signed for Rs 15 crore or more at an IPL mini auction. Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore entered the bidding race for Curran as his price quickly reached Rs 7 crore, at which point Rajasthan Royals joined the bidding. RCB dropped out shortly after as RR and MI continued to engage in a fierce bidding war. Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants entered the fray shortly after before Punjab eventually broke the bank. Curran was the Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup in Australia earlier this year. Curran picked up 13 wickets during the tournament, including a 3 for 12 in the final against Pakistan, which won him the Player of the Match award. “Very happy to have him on board, he has a lot of skills with both bat and ball. We had two or three allrounders in mind, Sam might be lucky he came up first,” Trevor Bayliss of Punjab Kings said during the break. Curran d...

IPL 2023: Three players PBKS could’ve picked instead of Sam Curran

Punjab Kings (PBKS) had a disappointing campaign last year and just like every year, parted ways with a lot of their players and even bought a new coaching staff for the upcoming season. They released their former captain and opener, Mayank Agarwal, and did not buy him back in the recently concluded auction on December 23 in Kochi. PBKS went for the rising all-rounder Sam Curran and roped him in for INR 18.50 crore, thereby making him the most expensive buy of all-time in the IPL history. However, the franchise could have opted for numerous other players who could have easily proved to be steal buys and would have added better value to the team. The franchise already has potentially good fast bowlers like Arshdeep Singh and Kagiso Rabada alongside some gun batters in Jonny Bairstow, and Liam Livingstone among others, hence spending such a huge sum of money on Curran was baffling to some extent. There were certainly different areas they could have improved upon going into the next season of the Indian Premier League. Here are three players PBKS could’ve picked instead of Sam Curran 1. Ben Stokes Ben Stokes is a more complete all-rounder as compared to Sam Curran. He is a reliable middle-order batter and has a knack of picking wickets by bowling tight lines and lengths at pace. His incredible fielding abilities also adds to his skill sets. Stokes also would have come at a hefty price, but at the same time, the value he can add to a team is much more than what Sam Curran coul...

IPL 2023: Curran is a winner, you’ve to back him: Langeveldt

Sam Curran might have been bogged down by the pressure of his price tag in this IPL, but Punjab Kings bowling coach Charl Langeveldt backed the Englishman, terming him a “winner”. Andre Russell roared back to form by smashing Curran for three sixes off four balls to turn the match in favour of KKR, which sealed a thrilling five-wicket win to keep its playoff hopes alive in the IPL here on Monday. “He’s a winner. You want to back him. He’s our senior bowler as well, you can have days like this,” the South African said at the post-match media interaction. Curran, who became the most expensive player of the IPL after PBKS roped him in for Rs 18.5 crore, leaked 20 runs in the penultimate over to finish with figures of 3-0-44-0. IPL 2023: Russell’s message to Rinku is to “stay humble” Curran has just seven wickets from 11 matches, and his economy is 10-plus. “He’s one of those players who can come back and win us a game. It’s just about going back to the drawing board, keep it as simple as possible.” Hailing Russell’s knock, Langeveldt said: “He’s always a massive player, a game changer. We wanted to keep him quiet and tried to bowl outside his hitting zone.” Kagiso Rabada has played just five matches this season for PBKS as they preferred Nathan Ellis over the South African, and Langeveldt said it’s a no-brainer. “Ellis has been bowling well. He’s been our go-to guy, bowls well inside the powerplay and handles pressure. “It was a simple decision. I didn’t even think about that...
