We thought 2022 would bring the end of this, and indeed it was for the A33, the A53 and the A73. The entry-level Galaxy A13 and Galaxy A23, though, are still subjected to this treatment, and today we will be reviewing the 5G version of the Samsung Galaxy A23. The Galaxy A23 5G is the same smartphone as its LTE counterpart, something that's not often the case with these versions. Samsung has used the Snapdragon 695 5G chipset instead of the Snapdragon 680, which in addition to the 5G modem, has allowed the GPU to draw the interface with up to 120fps for some extra smooth action on the 6.6-inch PLS LCD 1080p screen. We appreciate the 120Hz upgrade as it can make things feel smoother, especially with the new One UI 5 (with Android 13) update that's already available on this phone. The panel still has the same old-school droplet-shaped notch, which may seem dated but is not a huge blunder in our books. The phone shares an identical no-nonsense design with the rest of the Galaxy A phones with a flat Gorilla Glass front, a plastic frame and a matte plastic back that's reminiscent of the high-end Galaxy S22 series. There is no water protection on the Galaxy A23 5G model, something that's reserved for the AMOLED-packing Galaxy A33 and upwards...

As it's usually the case with budget Samsung phones, the main focus seems to be the camera department. We often see better ultrawide solutions and more advanced main cameras used in Samsung's midrangers, compared to rivals, that is. The Galaxy A23 is no exception to the rule. Despite being a budget handset, it carries a 50MP main camera, which also happens to be optically stabilized. The other three cameras don't stand out in any way, though. We also have a big 6.6-inch display, which is not OLED, but we rarely get to see an OLED around these price points. Something had to give, after all, and it's understandable. Samsung Galaxy A23 specs at a glance: • Body: 164.5x76.9x8.4mm, 195g; Glass front (Gorilla Glass 5), plastic frame, plastic back. • Display: 6.60" PLS LCD, 90Hz, 1080x2408px resolution, 20.07:9 aspect ratio, 400ppi. • Chipset: Qualcomm SM6225 Snapdragon 680 4G (6 nm): Octa-core (4x2.4 GHz Kryo 265 Gold & 4x1.9 GHz Kryo 265 Silver); Adreno 610. • Memory: 64GB 4GB RAM, 64GB 6GB RAM, 128GB 4GB RAM, 128GB 6GB RAM, 128GB 8GB RAM; eMMC 5.1; microSDXC (dedicated slot). • OS/Software: Android 12, One UI 4.1. • Rear camera: Wide (main): 50 MP, f...

Samsung's $299 Galaxy A23 5G Aims to Be the Best New Budget Phone

I love portable technology—if you can put it in a pocket or a bag, I’m probably into it. I’ve covered phones and tablets of all shapes and sizes, and reviewed everything from game consoles to laptops in my decade-plus career. Prior to joining PCMag, I wrote articles for Android Authority, How-To Geek, MUO, New Atlas, Tom’s Hardware, and plenty of other tech publications. Move over Samsung on Thursday announced the Galaxy A23 5G, a $299.99 follow-up to the wildly popular Galaxy A32 5G. For the price, it comes with a number of features you might not expect, such as multiple cameras and an extra-large battery. The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 695 processor, which should offer enough power for most entry-level smartphone buyers. It also supports Notably, the phone's 6.6-inch screen offers 2,220-by-1,080-pixel resolution and an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, specs that aren't too common among sub-$300 handets. It also has a multi-lens camera stack with a 50MP primary sensor. Samsung specifically touts an Advanced Portrait Mode for the camera that lets you capture high-quality images with attractive bokeh (background blur). Rounding out the spec list is a 5,000mAh battery that should keep the phone running for quite some time. Samsung claims "super-fast" charging, but doesn't specify an exact speed. The new Samsung Galaxy A23 5G packs powerful specs at a budget price

These include a 6.6-inch FHD+ edge-to-edge display. It uses an LCD panel rather than AMOLED technology (the latter typically being preferred) but it does at least pack a 120Hz refresh rate. The Samsung Galaxy A23 5G also has a multi-lens camera, though as with most cheap phones not all of these lenses sound particularly special. Still, they’re headlined by a 50MP sensor, which is a promising spec tidbit. That's joined by a 2MP macro camera, a 2MP depth sensor, and an 8MP selfie snapper. Other specs of the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G include a 5,000mAh battery with 25W charging, 5G, of course, a Snapdragon 695 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and a microSD card slot. As for the design, there’s a V-shaped notch in the display, a large bezel below the screen, and a plain back, with a sizeable camera bump. Analysis: where this fits in Samsung’s line The Samsung Galaxy A23 5G is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy A22 5G; a phone which has a lower refresh rate and a slightly lesser chipset, but the same size battery and the same size and resolution of screen. So the new model should be an upgrade, but perhaps not an enormous one. For a further step up there’s the So it’s arguably an upgrade – and certainly positioned as such – but only a slight one.
