Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra review: when bigger isn’t better

Being on the cutting edge comes with other compromises too. It probably isn’t surprising to read that the Tab S8 Ultra’s massive screen makes using it as an actual tablet rather cumbersome. It also won’t come as a surprise to anyone familiar with Android tablets that there isn’t much software that takes good advantage of the S8 Ultra’s giant screen. The Tab S8 Ultra brings the design of the other Tab S8 models (which themselves are replicating the Tab S7 design) to a larger scale. It’s an aluminum tablet that’s virtually all screen, with thin bezels and a surprisingly thin chassis. I have not bent the retail unit we purchased for this review in my time with it, but it doesn’t feel like it would take much effort to crunch it in half if that’s your goal. Aside from its thickness, the other dimensions of the Ultra are Large. It’s nearly two full inches wider than the 12.9-inch iPad Pro in landscape orientation (though, thanks to the magic of aspect ratios, it’s about a quarter of an inch shorter than the iPad) and tips the scales at 1.6 pounds before you add a case or any accessories. It’s not the kind of tablet that can be easily held in one hand, and even holding it up with two hands can be quite cumbersome. The downside of its size is that the Ultra just isn’t great at the things I typically expect from a tablet: taking notes by hand, reading ebooks, or casually consuming content on the couch or while traveling. Doing any of those things with the Ultra is more unwieldy tha...

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra: a gigantic Android tablet that'll prove divisive

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra’s giant size will be divisive but beyond that this is a super-powerful, if super-expensive, tablet that’s great for work or play. Its S Pen, powerful chipset and good-looking screen all make it incredibly useful. You’ll need to buy a case for it, though, because it feels a little fragile. Price and availability Design Display Performance, specs and cameras Accessories Battery life Should I buy the Tab S8 Ultra? In the constant game of one-up-manship between Samsung and Apple, the • Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra at Samsung for $999.99 This is a huge tablet, there’s no way around that fact, and depending on your gadget preferences that’s either a major selling point or an insurmountable issue that’ll put you off. We haven’t seen a tablet that big before; even laptops don’t always hit that size. This is a leviathan. There are certainly reasons why you might like a slate as gigantic as this. The massive amount of screen real estate is great for note-taking and sketching with the included S Pen stylus, as well as viewing multiple documents at once or one large sheet or timeline. Plus, it’s great as a portable screen for playing games or watching movies. However, the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is large and unwieldy to carry around, and it feels pretty fragile thanks to its size. The magnetic S Pen strip is in a silly location - Android simply isn’t iPadOS when it comes to functionality - so you’ll probably need to buy a case to protect it. And of course, a...

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 tablets; How to preorder

These new models create a little more choice if you’re in the market for an Android tablet — a fairly small field outside of Samsung. We will have to do a full review before we can say how good the Tab S8 series delivers in these three form factors, but in the meantime, these tablets are due out February 25th, and preorders are open now at retailers like While the trio of tablets share a lot in common — including eight-core processors, a starting storage capacity of 128GB, quad-speaker arrays, metal chassis, and a new S Pen included in the box — there are some key factors to choose from based on your priorities. The most obvious one is size, with nearly five inches separating the Tab S8 from the S8 Ultra. The Tab S8’s smaller screen isn’t just more portable — it’s also relegated to using a more basic LED panel, while the two jumbo-size tabs get the OLED treatment. Larger OLED panels with higher contrast and color quality make the Tab S8 Plus and S8 Ultra a logical choice if you enjoy watching lots of videos or prefer more physical space to use the included S Pen. Though if you’re a notch-hater, be aware that the Tab S8 Ultra has a little cutout at the top to accommodate the larger screen. Lastly, if you require a cellular-connected tablet, the Tab S8 Plus is the only model configurable with a 5G radio.
