Rukhsana Sultana: Sanjay Gandhi's 'ice

Rasheed Kidwai’s book 24 Akbar Road gives readers a glimpse at the lesser known personalities of the Emergency, including Sanjay Gandhi’s associate Sultana who managed to annoy both Indira and Maneka. Maneka Gandhi defended her husband stoutly even after she left Indira’s house and joined the right-wing BJP. According to her, the Emergency brought about order and discipline in the country. ‘There were no power failures, no strikes or lockouts, citizens went about without the fear of being mugged, robbed or raped, everything was available at reasonable prices, the slums had been cleared, the stench of open sewers abolished and, instead, clean, wholesome and cheap housing complexes raised in the suburbs, the arid desert of sand and rock turned into lush green, parks and woodland. These were only some of things that Sanjay did for his city.’ To Maneka, Sanjay had always been a caring husband. If she was feeling under the weather, Sanjay would skip Parliament to be with her. Barely three months before his untimely death, when their son Varun Feroze was to be born, Sanjay accompanied her to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and stayed by her side through the birth. ‘The AIIMS doctors later told me that he was the first man to come into the delivery room while his wife was having a baby,’ Maneka said. Columnist Kumkum Chadha, who covered Sanjay Gandhi during and after the Emergency, recalled how once, after giving a controversial interview in which ...

Sanjay Gandhi National Park: The Complete Guide

Things to Do Sanjay Gandhi National Park covers 104 square kilometers (65 miles) and is divided into three areas: a buffer area, a tourist area, and a core area. There are seven hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty found within the core area. Two prominent temples are located inside the park—the Trimurti Digambar Jain temple, complete with three towering white statues of Lord Adinath, Lord Bahubali, and Lord Bharata, and the Mahadeo Shiva temple near the Kanheri Buddhist Caves. • Shilonda Trail: This gently meandering trail winds its way from the low-lying scrubland into a dense evergreen forest. Once an area occupied by a tribal settlement, nature has reclaimed this space, allowing trekkers to explore the tundra and wade through refreshing crystal clear forest streams. • Malad Trail Line: Another easy trail, the Malad Trail Line takes you past a manmade watering hole frequented by the park's wildlife. Along the route, you will see several deciduous trees, including teak, red silk cotton, palash, Laburnum, and bamboo. The trail ends at the suburb of Malad, where the forest and city meet. • Highest Point Trail: This invigorating trek starts at the Bamboo Trail trailhead and then crosses streams and negotiates rocky hillsides to the highest point in the park. From here you get a panoramic view of all three of the park's lakes against the backdrop of the city. • Nagla Block Trail: This trail is considered the park's most rewarding. However, it's situated in a remot...

Sanjay Gandhi: Flight of destiny

The dramatic death of Sanjay Gandhi in a plane crash last fortnight was an event of undefinable proportions. Not the least being its effect on the political face of India. Sanjay's dominance has ensured that his passing will leave a political vacuum that is dangerous in its dimensions. Inevitably, the new alignments that will be forged in his wake will create further imbalances in the political structure. It had the makings of a Greek tragedy. There was the obsessive taste for power, the reckless addiction to speed and the consuming urge to be glorified. There was a kingdom to take over, and legions of admiring lieutenants. Few men could have asked for more - and got it. The world, it seemed, was at the calling of Sanjay Gandhi, MP. But there was a fatal flow, as in all tragedies. When it struck, in the shape of a malevolent red aircraft, the instant heroism matamorphosed into instant martyrdom and the glorification became absolute. Last week, as the surging crowds pressed towards the funeral cortege of Sanjay Gandhi all along the 12-km route to Shantivana, they invoked the image of an immortal, Sanjay Gandhi amar rahen, they shouted, participating in one of the grandest but unofficial state funerals ever organised in Delhi, and the other slogan that caught the popular imagination extended the image further: J ab tak suraj chand rahega, Sanjay tera naam rahega. Sanjay Gandhi achieved in death what other politicians hanker after all their lives. In the process he altered th...

SANJAY GANDHI, A LEADER AHEAD OF HIS TIMES

Sanjay Gandhi, whose 74th birth anniversary falls on Monday, is amongst a handful of leaders of independent India whose imprint on the Congress is indelible. More than 40 years after his tragic death under mysterious circumstances, in a plane crash, his handpicked people continue to occupy stellar positions in the grand old party. He was just 33 years old when he passed away, yet had it not been due to his efforts, the Janata Party government would have continued for some more time and the Congress would have found it extremely difficult to make a comeback. His critics always thought of him as an autocrat, holding him responsible for both the 1975 Emergency as well as the excesses connected with it. However, no one can deny that his five-point programme, which was central to the activities of the Indian Youth Congress, showed his vision. When nobody spoke about ecology, he made a pitch for growing more trees, he was a strong advocate of a small family, much needed to control the population explosion, as also the concept of `Each one Teach one’. The Emergency which was clamped following the suggestion of the then West Bengal Chief Minister, Sidhartha Shankar Ray, proved to be counter-productive and in the elections that were held in 1977, the Congress was virtually wiped out in north India. Amongst the stalwarts who were defeated were the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, arguably the most acclaimed mass leader of the last century, and Sanjay, who was trounced in his maid...
