It is believed that on this day, Lord Shiva declared his son Ganesha superior to all gods. During each month, Lord Ganpati is worshipped with a different name and Peeta. On this day, devotees wake up early and wear clean clothes after taking a bath. Then they worship Lord Ganesha by offering prayers and chanting slokas. On the other hand, Pradyumna, the father of Aniruddha, was worried after his son went missing. Pradyumman was the eldest son of Shri Krishna and Rukmini. Eventually, Lord Krishna sought help from Rishi Lomash, who revealed the chain of events. The sage suggested Shri Krishna to keep a fast on Sankashti Chaturthi to get rid of the problem. A few days later, Shri Krishna defeated Banasur in a battle and rescued Aniruddha.

Rituals: On the day of Sankashti Chaturthi, devotees wake up early in the morning and take bath. They dedicate the day towards worshipping Lord Ganesha. The devotees observe a strict fast while some keep a partial fast too. The observer of this fast can consume fruits, vegetables and roots of plants. The staple diet on this day comprises of peanuts, potatoes and sabudana khichdi. The Sankashti puja is done in the evening, after seeing the moon. During the puja, the idol of Lord Ganesha is decorated with flowers. A lamp is also lit in front of the idol. The devotees then read the ‘vrat katha’ specific to the month.
