SENSEX, first compiled in 1986, was calculated on a 'Market Capitalization-Weighted' methodology of 30 component stocks representing large, well-established and financially sound companies across key sectors. The base year of SENSEX was taken as 1978-79. SENSEX today is widely reported in both domestic and international markets through print as well as electronic media. It is scientifically designed and is based on globally accepted construction and review methodology. Since September 1, 2003, SENSEX is being calculated on a free-float market capitalization methodology. The 'free-float market capitalization-weighted' methodology is a widely followed index construction methodology on which majority of global equity indices are based; all major index providers like MSCI, FTSE, STOXX, S&P and Dow Jones use the free-float methodology. The growth of the equity market in India has been phenomenal in the present decade. Right from early nineties, the stock market witnessed heightened activity in terms of various bull and bear runs. In the late nineties, the Indian market witnessed a huge frenzy in the 'TMT' sectors. More recently, real estate caught the fancy of the investors. Markets rose for the third straight session, but gains were limited as investors eye the US Fed rate outcome just about an hour from now. As many as 230 stocks hit their 52-week highs on the BSE. The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 85.35 points to settle at 63,228.51 while the NSE Nifty advanced 39.75 points or 0.21 per cent to end at 18,755.90. And the Wholesale Price Index fell to a 3-year low of minus 3.48 per cent in May. The fall can be attributed to a fall in prices of food, fuel and manufactured items.

The Rs 607 crore IPO had a fresh issue of Rs 350 crore and an offer of sale (OFS) of 90 lakh equity shares and had received an overwhelming response from investors, with subscription of more than 67 times. Equity benchmarks, the BSE Sensex and Nifty, ended lower on Thursday due to the Fed's hawkish comments, which overshadowed the pause in rate hikes. L&T Finance rose 4.72%, RBL Bank dropped 3.78%, and Godrej Properties was up 4.15%. According to Amol Athawale, VP-Technical Research Analyst at Kotak Securities, investors should buy L&T Finance above Rs 113, buy RBL Bank above Rs 175 and buy Godrej Properties on dips.
